Dirt cheap student car

I'm 19, a student, and thinking of buying a car. I already have a full licence (since January last year) and had a car until about 6 months ago. What do you guys think about picking up a dirt cheap car for about £500 (like a 10 year old golf/polo)? And what other costs should I be aware of?
tax, MOT, car insurance etc


edit: Thinking about it. This should definitely be in motors. Could a mod move it. Thanks.

General consensus is they seem to be reliable and a good bet for the money and there are also costs for consumable parts such as tyres, clutch, brakes, wiper blades etc which you'll have to take into account as they will need replacing at varying intervals depending on use. Tyres are probabaly around £50 each, depending what you go for.

I'm 19, and still cannot afford to get insured on my dad's '98 mondeo. :( Definately not buying a car because its the worst investment you can make when you're a student. I'm getting a new bike soon so that will replace my urge to drive for a few years! :D

do you have a licence? If not then I recommend you get onto it ASAP. I had the same view as you, never needed nor wanted a car at uni, ended up getting my licence at 21. Now I get raped on insurance for nice cars simply because I have not held my licence for long. I would be paying much less now if I had passed at 17, even if I hadn't driven a car at all between then and now.

Im 21 and looking to buy my first car next year.

Will the insurance still be proper expensive, ive never had my own insurance, but was on a joint insurance for 2 or 3year after i passed my test when i was 17
 
He is thinking of buying a car, he has had lots of suggestions for cars and i thought i would mention the cg125 as it is another option. He hasn't said he needs a car he said he is thinking of buying one.


edit: unless he is commuting 40 miles a day or carrying loads of equipment, a motorbike is a perfectly acceptable and more to the point cheap form of transport, especially when money is an issue. The insurance will probably be about 50 - 70 % cheaper.

Half the people in this forum don't need the car they own. Why do the youngsters here drive BMW's and Subaru's and pay £1500+ insurance when a Nissan Almera is perfectly adequate for their needs?

Unless stated otherwise, the dude wants a car!

Yes but i think you have missed the money issue and that style isnt one, he wants a £500 car i.e cheap and he wants low insurance, he will probably still get a car, but i dont understand your argument, if i was ramming the idea down his throat after he said he doesnt want a motorbike then your argument stands, but your just playing devils advocate without any interesting point.

I think the OP has had a reasonable response to his request. A Mondeo should suffice. It's cheap, comfortable and fairly reliable. Perhaps something smaller would be better but that's a preference thing. Money is always an issue with regards to transport but if money is an issue then why not cycle or use public transport? And you're missing an issue, the guy is thinking of buying a CAR! :)

He hasn't mentioned he doesn't want a lot of things though. A bicycle, a tricycle, a helicopter, an ice cream. He's asked for a car. Perhaps the OP could clarify this and perhaps state whether scooters are a viable mode of transport for his needs and desires.
