Hi OCuk'ers

Last night I received an ISP letter of abuse from PIPEX even though I am with Freedom to Surf (who have a very relaxed user policy) for the downloading of a torrent game.

The email was sent to my hotmail email address which is a bit odd and not my f2s email address.

Its information is correct on the filename and my IP address - its from ESA and it sounds legit.

PIPEX want me to reply to the email within 7 days or it states further action may be taken.

Im a bit worried about this.....anyone have any suggestions or advice please?

I was downloading a game from a torrent (yes I know I had a momentary lapse of sense)

You know a lot of people seem to post on here about being sent letters and EVERY one ive seen has been to do wih downloading a game

Are they not cracking down on movie and music sharing? games seem to be the only ones being tracked to a high extent, even one of my parents friends sons was done for downloading a game not so long ago, yet even from all the music hes downloaded they never said a thing about that

not that im aware - I hear they were bought out by Tiscali (yes the evil satan spawn) and when I called f2s to enquire about this they assured me that tiscali was just financially backing them and they still have a very relaxed usage policy (which is why I went with f2s because I would be free to surf)

I mean what if I had purchased this game a year ago and lost it and I was legally getting it back via albeit illegal methods? or does that not work

i dont think relaxed usage policy means they will let you get away with downloading pirate copies of games ,etc if a complaint is put forward to them

Pipex must have something to do with it somewhere, if they dont then I dont see what business it is of theirs

Pipex have owned Freedom 2 Surf for a while and Tiscali recently bought Pipex.

ok so its basically a warning from the parent company

what do they want you to reply to them with? just to acknowledge you have read the email?

Just ignore it, and start using Newsgroups. Im pretty sure ISP cannot see what your downloading via newsgroups? I might be wrong.

JBuk here is a snippet of the email:
'Please reply to this email within 7 days stating that your PIPEX account will not be used for copyright infringement or any breaches of the law or the PIPEX Acceptable Use Policy.

Failure to respond or further infringements will cause your account to be temporarily suspended, and could also result in your account being terminated.'

I normally use Usenext to download off newsgroup servers (I thought newsgroups are safe? torrents obviously arent)

Ok reading your responses....seems this email is legit and I need to respond to them like they ask.

I wouldnt be suprised if it was a Pipex email sponsored by Western Union myself. How did they get your hotmail address? ever given it to them?

What a load of tosh - "please reply to state you agree to not break the law"..

Its not an opt-in system lol.

Ignore it and use encrypted newsgroups or dont download at all. If they cut you off, be glad you're free to move to a real ISP who knows their place is a carrier not a nanny of your data

Responding will only make it worse.

You are then pretty much admitting liability. I'd ignore it. How do they know if you access your hotmail account? Mine is just full of spam.

Have a look around on google for more information about this nigh on unlawful act that they are doing (search for david lyons on these forums as well).

I just dont want a police raid at my place - them commando rolling to my pc - snatching it and rapelling out the window - and them falling over when they find all the illegally downloaded content. (not the place to probably write that - dont want the high and mighty OCuk'er gank fest on me on how wrong that is.)

I believe you pay for pc hardware enough - why then pay for software when these companies rip us off and are making a fortune.

(mental note - never use torrents)

:)

hmm i would just ignore the mail and stop downloading games off torrent sites

if they sent it to a hotmail account you could always deny you have never read the mail if they ever get funny about it

TBH, I would have thought they would have e-mailed your F2s account, I mean how would they have got your hotmain account?

Sure its not a hoax? asking you to visit a webpage and fill in details?
