i'm looking to get a bike stand for my new road bike to park the bike on when not in use as well as for servicing & cleaning

came across MINOURA W3100 WORKSTAND while browsing halfords in-store

will this be ok for the job?

btw halfords have a special offer in-store £53 on one of these (seem to retail on-line £80-100)

No idea on that particular stand, but just remember to only clamp your bike via the seatpost, not by any of the bike frame.

Should be fine, as long as you don't clamp so hard that it squashes it (carbon frame?)

No different to pickup up a bike with one hand, on a park of the frame.

A seatpost is designed to be clamped, the tubes on bikes aren't designed to withstand a crushing force. Alloy tubed frames are surprisingly thin, even more so if the tubed are butted.

I use one of these for parking the bike on. You can tweak the gears no problem with it. May buy a big workshop stand at somepoint.

Is that advice more for road bikes, or bikes in general?

it will be true for all bikes

if your really carefull you could clamp a frame but just dont over do it

personally i wouldnt risk it as damaging a frame could weaken the bike and lead to the frame completely failing

I never really have mine all that tight to be honest, but it's pretty obvious my stand is designed to clamp the frame since it has cable runs on the actual clamp itself. I'd of thought a steel framed MTB would have been able to cope with that! :)

it can depend how you clamp the tube, and the shape of the clamp jaws

for a round tube then using jaws that are of the same radius as the tube will minimise the risk of frame damaged as you would only need a light grip to hold the frame well enough to work on the bike
using flat jaws or v-jaws too tight could squash the tube

steel should be slightly stronger but if the steel tube has a thinner wall than aluminium then it will work out probably the same

Just had a look on the Park Tool website and it shows my stand being used in both ways. The clamp itself is rounded so I doubt it'll cause any weakening, but I don't really tighten it up anyway - mavity and a rubber clamp do the majority of the work. I'll try it on the seatpost though for a giggle, see how it balances up. :)

picked up the minoura w-3100 from halfords yesterday. made in japan simple assembly very solid & nice price £54 (normally between 80-100 on-line)

nice piece of kit :)

btw the instructions mention seat post only (though the demo model in halfords was clamped to a frame tube!)
