ANyone got one/driven one? My Astra sports hatch is due to go back in 3 months so need to start looking. Really fancy an Audi so got a few prices on a A£ and the 1.6sport seems to be fairly well priced and have enough car for the money.

In the sport the 1.6 is my limit unfortunately, plus Im thinking of the fuel costs to a degree too!! My Astra is a 1.6 and while its not going to do much on a track its pretty decent to get my foot down on the A1 to work when Im late!

Wasn't this the one that James May reviewed when he was doing the chauffering service in London.

He said that the car was the base model in front of the owner, which she quickly retorted - no, its the 'sport' model.

So, its the base model, but with less comfortable suspension. :D

my old man has a A3 1.4T, its not very fast but is the quietest engine i have ever heard (or not in fact!)

In comparison to what? Walking?

The A3 is a heavy car, and the 1.6 feels woefully lethargic for the car.

Try it, but I found it to be horrid, then again, I'd probably find a 1.6 Astra to be disghusting.

1.4T?

Yep they now do a 1.4TFSI which replaces the 1.6FSI model.

IIRC it has 125bhp or thereabouts which is enough to propell the A3 to 60 in around 9 seconds.

If you have to have the smallest engine that is the one I would go for(over the 1.6FSI).

The 1.8TFSI is a better bet though as with 160bhp it has more grunt to haul the heavy A3 around. It also does arund 40 to the gallong IIRC which isn't too bad.

Why is 1.6 your limit? If its a value thing I'd get something cheaper with a proper engine.

Its all I can afford. Not really looking for anything fast, my Astra 1.6 is fine for what I want/need so happy somewhere in the middle between speed and economy.

Please please please stretch to the 1.8T! If you ever happen to drive one after getting the 1.6 you'll probably go mad and start throttling cats.

I think the point fox is trying to make is that your spending lots of money on a badge for a fairly low spec average car with not much poke and you would be better off getting something cheaper and getting a more refined engine, not all small engines are economical, an old bug has 40bhp and a 1.6 but only get 25 to the gallon.

edit: and if anything a 1.8t is a better bet as the resale value will be higher and you can drive sensibley and not rev the crud out of it, and if you need the grunt youve got it.
