Spec Me An Unsocial Job

Firemen also get paid well but there's the risk you might have to do something dangerous.

My sister is a firefighter and believe me they do not get paid well. She has to work very long shifts, that get extended without notice when she's on a shout. Most firefighters have second jobs or sign on as retained (as she does) at another station. For the danger they are in daily and for the things she has to witness (fatal RTAs etc) the money they get is disgusting.

The money is fairly good. For the hours they work. They where offered a substantial payrise. But would not give up there right to have a second job. they where being greedy.

If the money was fairly good, they wouldn't need a second job. I doubt they're just being greedy.

That's exactly what they where offered a Substantial payrise, if they gave there right up for a 2nd job.

There pay is great, as they have loads of time of to get a 2nd job. What they wanted was amazing pay and the right for a 2nd job. Hence being greedy.

Okay just checked.

And back in 2003 they got £21,531. So if they've been offered even more money but refused it that's their own fault. Even £21,531 is a decent enough wage.

And it certainly isn't the most dangerous jobs in the uk.

1. Fishermen
2. Merchant seafarers
3. Aircraft flight deck officers
4. Railway lengthmen
5. Scaffolders
6. Roofers and glaziers
7. Forestry workers
8. Quarry and other mine workers
9. Dockers and stevedores
10. Lorry drivers

ALthough I'm surprised by forestry workers and lorry drivers.

Bus driver, tube driver or train driver. Firemen also get paid well but there's the risk you might have to do something dangerous.

Indeed, you might have to put up with the numerous wastes of life that we have floating round the streets.

If only they could all have been aborted.

For packing boxes in a warehouse maybe, I think you'd change your mind if you had to cut mutilated bodies out of a car for that money. In fact I don't think my sister gets that much - I seem to remember she started on 19k.

As for having plenty of time for a 2nd job, she works 6pm to 9am on nights and 9am to 7pm on days then 2 days off. If you can find 'loads' of time for a 2nd job in there then all power to you.

EDIT > found it, from the Kent Fire Service website - "The starting salary is £19,394"

You obviously dont know anyone working at Nissan in Washington. I have about 7 friends who work there, ive been there and done a line test.
[...]
its VERY robot like

you're right, I don't know anyone who works there - but what you've posted has just backed up (IMHO) my statement that it is a bog standard job on bog standard wages.....

For me personally, I wouldn't consider 18-23k or whatever 'well paid' nor would I consider something mundane to necessarily be unsocial (I was thinking more in terms of night shifts/periods away from home etc...)

perhpas the OP has different criteria though - In which case I'm probably way off on a tangent and you're suggestion may well fit what he's after

and as for the hours in nissan, overtime isnt optional, if its on, you have to work it. Unless you have a very good excuse or can get someone to cover. one of the shifts also starts at 1am in the morning :) pretty mad place to work.

I don't know what Warehouse jobs you've worked at before. :p

I never mentioned anything about having plenty of time for a 2nd job either.

Plus no amount of money would get me cutting bodies out of cars. But your sister knew the salary and the requirements before she joined.

Nice quote edit there, this is the full line from the website (you seemed to accidentally cut the front bit off).

The starting salary is £19,394 and rises to £25,850. On promotion to Station Manager you could expect to earn in excess of £34,000 and senior officers can earn in excess of £50,000.

She has been there 2 years and it hasn't risen yet.

Back on topic and to the OP, the fire service isn't an unsocial job - you become very close to your team and do lots of things together, and the job challenges change all the time so if you're after a job that you don't get close to people and can be a robot don't do this.

Sorry I was being lazy - that was directed at someone elses comment. :p

Indeed she did and loves the job, it is my opinion that they are underpaid.
