Is my stereo wired properly?

I had this stereo wired up in my old Clio and it was always fine. When I turned the ignition off the stereo went off and I had no problems at all with it. I now have it wired up in my Pug 306 and the dalm thing drains my battery unless I pull the red or yellow wire out the back.

The stereo it's self works fine the only difference is that in the 306 when I turn the ignition off the stereo always stays on unlike the Clio unless I manually hit the power button on the stereo.

I was told to try switching the yellow and red wires round so I did but it made no difference, the battery went flat again! Apparently one is a switched live and the other a permanent live to keep the radio stations tuned in but like I say it didn't fix the problem.

Anyway here's some pics if the wiring, if you spot the problem I would be most thankful! :)

Stereo is an Alpine CDE-9871R by the way.

Get your tester out and find out which of the red/yellow leads is the constant live and which is switched, then work from there.

Also i think you might need to fiddle with fuse no.1 to alter the behavior of the switched/constant live.

wont swapping the red/yellow cables round sort it? Doesn't however you have those connected effect this, some cars need both of them red > yellow and some need them red > red and yellow > yellow?

swap over the red plug into the red socket, same with the yellow, for a try. If that doesnt work then use a tester. Sounds like you have your constant negative, and your ignition one mixed up.

Are your live (red) and earth (black) in the same connector? if your red is constant live from the battery then this would explain the drain. Cant tell from the pics if it is tho. probs in the above connector.

I remember my Alpine head unit did this previously in a 306 - would function fine with the ignition switched off, however it would turn off when the ignition was switched off (not stay on).

I guess ZG002's solution may help.

Some cars (such as the 306) do not have an ignition switched supply for the head unit. How quickly does the stereo drain your battery when it's switched off?

Apart from buying a headunit that does not consume stupid amounts of current when it's switched off, the only solution is to install your own switched feed by tapping into a suitable circuit in the fusebox.

It seems to depend, if I don't use the car over the weekend then I try use it during the week it's usually completely drained to a point where the ignition lights won't even light up.

Red comes from a separate lead and not a connector on the dashboard side black I can't remember so will have to have a look tomorrow. :) I thought constant live was also pink as seen in the first pic? I think I read that somewhere I could be wrong though!

I was going to suggest this as my golf doesn’t have a switched live to the head unit. Running a wire to the fuse box is a quick and easy fix.

Surely hes going to need a perminant live anyway? or all his radio stations will be lost.

Yes but you don't really want them both permanently live as it can drain the battery much quicker. One is designed to be a switched live, the other live keeps the memory only.
