Just a quick question, even with SP1 installed on vista do you still think its a good idea to disable indexing, or just tweak it?

If so, what tweaks?

Thanks

Swinnie

Really it depends on how often you use search, and for what sort of files. Personally, I have indexing switched off because I don't use search on my own PC, and so it's not needed. If you use search a lot, then leave it active, if you want to tweak it, get it to index only file types and locations you are likely to search.

I never search for files (actually, never), and I'm a silence freak (indexing makes my drives squeek like a mofo), so I rip the service out during my vLite :)

When you need to use it, it works a treat, but the performance hit during the indexing stage just isn't worth the 1 second saved when looking for a file imo

That's either your drive or you've not let it finish indexing. :p

I leave indexing on these days, in fact I expand it to cover my whole hard disk so I can fast search and launch any application on my PC from the search bar on the start menu. Saves cluttering up the start menu.

My disk stopped grinding a long, long time ago when it was fully indexed.

I am going to leave Vista's Indexing Service on, as I think it may have finished indexing yesterday as I haven't heard the drive being thrased today.

i wish there was a faster way to untick all the file types it searches for..

by default it should only index exe, lnk, videos, music & pictures imo

How do you tell Vista what file types to search for? (I'm new to Vista as you probably know from my other thread).

why not?

I also smoke, drink and play violent computer games.

Not everything you enjoy has to be good for you or make sense :p

Yeah i know :rolleyes:

yes but:
Smoke = addicted
Drink = Enjoy/alcholic
Computer Games = Fun

Re-installing vista each month is none of the above
Re-installing Vista monthly without reason = Nuts

Re-installing vista each month is none of the above

I (and I really can't be the only one) *do* enjoy making new vlites, playing around with the OS and giving myself a fresh canvas to play with after a while.
I *do* find it fun.

So ner :p

well done :rolleyes:

7 out of 18 posts completely irrelevant to Vista's Indexing Service.

My reasoning for disabling the Indexing Service is completely legit, your reasons for "/win" etc completely spam.
