Defence committee backs plans for UAV surveillance in Britain

The only thing I can think of that it will be a nuisance for is people sunbathing naked in the back garden. Otherwise, who the hell gives a damn.

They will be perfect for their loiter times when it comes to surveillance of genuine suspects. You can't hover a helicopter over a suspects house due to
a)noise
b)fuel consumption
A UAV gets around all of these with long time-on-task and low noise, as well as lower pilot training cost and no pilot fatigue. They're not pursuing a blanket of UAVs surveying the whole of the country - satellites can do that already - they want timely and accurate surveillance over a small area for specific targets.

I'm more worried about the implications of having it fly at low level in VMC/VFR without a pilot in the aircraft - won't somebody please think of the other aviators! [/aviation geek]

Dude, they weigh a fraction of what a 'copter weighs, and are powered by one super-efficient engine.

Like i said its irrelevant they do a completely different job to a chopper anyway.

Still ridiculously expensive to invest in and run

The fact you can make that statement shows its utter bull****

we are one of the most watched population in the world, last time I checked this wasnt communist china, this government want to hold people for 42 days without charge, whatever happened to the basic principal of a fair trial "innocent until proven guilty" and now they want to use military technology to spy on their own population. This country has gone to the dogs I for one would be the first to stand up and rebel against the state after all we voted them in, perhaps now its time to stop complaining and do something.

You realise the helicopter is military technology right?

also as for the survalence, when on a night out in Manchester it's quite nice to know that if some guy starts a fight the police are going to turn up fairly sharpish.

But the fact you can protest the government shows they aren't a police state.

Thats still there :/ And they need a judge to look at the current evidence and have a damn good reason to get the current extended holding time (28 days iirc)

I for one would be the first to stand up and rebel against

Why don't you then? Oh yeah thats right cause that would require more than a pair of raisins dangling between your legs.

yes but a helicopter isnt a form of covert surveillance, using a uav is open to abuse by the state as has happened with cctv and the RIPA powers, councils have gone mad on RIPA just to fine people for stupid things.
Im sure if you had done nothing wrong you would love to be banged up for 42 days without charge, as im sure you can trust a judge to make the right choice not, he/she will go with whatever the state wants, whatever happend to a jury.
I do complain about the state constantly and am active in amnesty and many other pro human rights groups who all agree this country is quickly abusing its powers and is on the right track to becoming a police state

great bye bye civil liberties, UK welcome to the police state

What a complete idiot of a statement. Why are people so worried about this? If we had 60 million UAV's I might be worried but they aren't going to start deploying them to follow me walking/driving to work unless they think I'm an unsavoury character. I wish some people in here would stop being so sensationalist.

I for one welcome them with their much lower carbon footprint! :p

To those who think eroding our civil liberties is a good idea, let me ask you this: are those in power put there to rule us, or to serve us?
