Hey there, not long now till my canada trip, Have a few questions though, As far as I know its fine to whip out the dslr on the plane from my handluggage but was wondering what on earth sort of settings would I use for photos looking out the window. (first time ever on a plane)

Want to take phots like this below from the incredible photos thread, Credit to asim18 its just stunning. (asim18 i put it on imageshack save hotlinking, hope you dont mind me using it as an example)

Shutter speed doesn't need to be particularly fast as the ground doesn't pass too fast, so probabaly going with the 1/focal length rule would be sufficient, iso 100 or 200, and the smallest aperture you can select to get the largest depth of field, and if you have a quick read up about hyperfocal focusing, you can focus manually to try and get most of the view in focus. :)

i took some wicked ones earlier this year with a point & click camera, as we flew over the alps... the cleanliness of the windows is the biggest issue!

take something to clear off the grease left by some kid pressing their head against the window. Wet wipe and a dry cloth or something.

Outside window is worse, plus always muck in between the double/triple glazing

I love taking photo's from plane windows. Main issues are Dirty Windows, Ice forming on the outside window, and the heat haze from the engines if you are sitting behind them. You can get stonking photo's of weather fronts and large geological features. Here are a few I took over the USA earlier this year.

Took that flying out of Cairns I think, I had a normal digital camera back then so I just whacked it on auto. Exif is embedded if you want to look.

Flying over a city and night looks **** incredible, don't know if there's anyway to take a shot like that since the plane is moving and you'd need a slow shutter speed, but it's breathtaking.

Oh, and of course, make sure you get a window seat ;)

Thanks for the advice folks and some stunning pictures, Window wipes will be packed, Seats are booked im by the window, just infront of the wings hopefully get some decent shots :D
