Looking at new phone and the difference between the N95 and N95 8gb is £74 over the 18 month contract. Is it worth the extra?

Cheers, Paj

In my opinion, no.

8gb one: 2.8" QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) Screen, built in 100mb storage + Built in 8gb flashdrive, black and has no camera lense cover.

Non 8gb one: 2.6" QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) Screen, built in 160mb storage, Silver and has a camera lense cover.

The 8gb version claims to have a better battery life but comparing my normal N95 with a few others including a couple of 8gb versions the battery life is pretty much the same which is rubbish lol

Standby time and talktime are pretty good on both but as soon as you start using camera a bit the battery soon goes down, one thing I really miss about my Sony Ericsson K810i is fact I could take a dozen or so pics do an hr or so phonecalls and still charge it once every 5 days, the N95 with same usage will need a charge within a day.

it looks nicer, other than that there is no real reason to spend more imo.
old one and a big sdhc card is more than enough.

I was going for an old one in store, but then I lined the two up next to each other and the difference in screen size was very noticeable. It may only be .2" on paper, but in real life it stands out.

8GB micro SD seems to around £25 so that would mean a difference of £50. 8GB is worth more 2nd hand at present so i suppose the actual cost difference won't really be £74.

Mine came with an 8gb card so yes :)

The newer model does look a lot nicer than the older one but it has no camera lense cover which I don't like.

Have to throw this in here for completeness but the newer one has more RAM, 128MB vs 64MB. Not storage but actual DRAM used for running applications.

Whether this is of any advantage depends heavily on which apps you run and how much you multitask so YMMV.

I started with the standard N95 and now I have the N95 8GB.
Personally I would go for the standard version. Although the 8gb has a bigger screen maybe looks nicer I find it buggy as hell. Even on the current unbranded firmware It crashes and randomly restarts much more than my old one ever did. The build quality is still crap (My brother has just had his standard N95 replaced via insurance and his new one is the most solidly built one I've seen yet) and the battery life is no better despite the increase in battery size/power.
Thats my 2p worth anyway.

Not a massive difference but the one thing I wish my n958gb did have was a lens cover. Not £74 worth of difference.

The extra RAM is a huge difference if you actually use applications. It doesn't just eliminate the "Out of Memory" errors the N95 used to get, it also means it runs faster.

Even on the current unbranded firmware It crashes and randomly restarts much more than my old one ever did.

This sounds more like a faulty phone than anything. It should not be randomly crashing, my 8gb never does.

I got one like this, had it replaced and the replacement never ever crashes and is much more repsonsive in the menus. Reckon yours is faulty. As to the OP, having used both types I much prefer the 8GB and I don't think it will cost you £75 extra in the long run. I think the 8GB is the one to go for.
