Hi there,

My PSU on the secondary PC just blew up, so its time to hunt out another...

What im planing on doing is replacing my aging Tagan 520w on my main gaming PC and moving this one to the secondary PC.

So im considering upgrading to the 4870x2 when its released and im considering this PSU... Tagan PipeRock TG800-BZ. It will also be running an overclocked CPU, 3 hard drives and a custom watercooling setup.

I guess im wondering how good this PSU is, i preferably want the power supply to be quiet.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Trox

One of the Zalman Heatpipe modular psu's would do nicely. Either the 750 or 850w versions. By far the best and quietest psu i have ever owned.

becuase Tagan use a UK RMA centre, and their BZ series are marvelous, id go with the one that you, the OP, posted.

I went for the Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 650W, and i must say, it has to be simply the BEST componant i have bought....EVER

Thanks for the info guys,

Any recommendations is appreciated, ill check into the corsair range as im not sure i like all those lights on the tagan psu

I agree that the Tagan does look a bit OTT but it's a great PSU. I have the 900 watt edition and it's been quiet, easy to install and seems to be very high quality.

Corsair's worth a look as is the zalman heatpipe units mentioned in the first reply.

How good are the Be Quiet PSUs?

Tempted to get the 850w one but its a bit more costly compared to the rest...

I recommend the Corsair range.

I second that, Corsair they tend to be very well priced and very good performers! They also have a very good RMA system from what I've heard!

I steer clear of Antec these days, RMA's have to go to Europe which with a heavy PSU isn't cheap. There are ways around this but it's never worth the hassle.

Corsiar's also have to go to Europe.

Can highly recommend the PSU as in sig. Powerful, solid, but especially, whisper quiet. And modular.

I'd stay away from the Tagans tbh. They are not as good as they used to be.

I was tempted to get another to replace my (still working) Tagan 480w but although the reviews are pretty good, if you google them they seem to be having major failure rates.

Plus, for some strange reason, Tagan have dropped the warranty to only a year now (well, one year full warranty, years 2 and 3 are parts only so a repair in labour and shipping may cost you more than the psu is worth) which is not good for a high end, high priced psu especially when other manufacturers give you 3 or 5 years.

Oh and the model you listed seems to suffer frequently from a high pitched scream under load (see yutube).

That put me off and made me get a OCZ Elitexstream 1000w. I was going to get a coolermaster M850 but the leads weren't long enough for my tower case and the cost of buying extension leads put me off.

Current best high end psus (750w+) are:

OCZ Elitexstream (game, mod and stealth not as good)
PC Power & Cooling
Silverstone Zeus
Antec Signature & Quattro
Thermaltake Toughpower (none of the other models though)
Corsair HX & TX
Coolermaster Real Power

To name a few!

I know I keeping linking this site but his reviews are great and thorough plus if you search the news section he links to other reviews from sites which he rates (premise seems to be they must use test equipment and check for ripple and noise and test to max capacity which a lot of sites don't) .

I drew up my short list from there. Unfortunately the cable length meant I got a non modular one (not first choice) but could not turn down a brand new OCZ 1000W psu for £69.99 :D

The 650W gets a good write up:

Johnnyguru reports quite a drop on the 12v rails in his review but apart from that it was fine and still within ATX regs:

ANd very,very quiet!

But at the price of the 850w model there are certainly plenty of others to consider as well which are better and/or cheaper.
