You must have set them up wrong, at least with my Xonar Stereo gives a better surround sound experience than 5.1 headsets.
It all boils down to a matter of opinion and what you prefer. I just prefer my 5.1 set

I had the Medussa 5.1 Headset and thought they were decent enough but when they died I moved to the Sennheiser HD280 Pro's and the stero quality is a lot better than the 5.1's ever where. As for the directional sound, the Stero HD280's are perfectly fine for that to and can tell where footsteps and gunshots are coming from etc.

I'm not looking to argue over this I'm just saying I prefer 5.1 to stereo when gaming.
