So tell me guys whats your opinion of him staying on for another season?

I read this article in the Sun today and I think the writer pretty much nailed what most United fans are thinking.

WELL, hallelujah!

Let’s get something straight right from the off, Cristiano.

It was never your decision in the first place.

Alex Ferguson decided last year — when he handed you a new contract to send your wages soaring — that you were most definitely staying at Manchester United.

He and the club had also made that clear through a tortuous summer of stories being batted back and forth between here and Madrid.

So who on earth do you think you are? To imagine that after two good seasons in five years at Old Trafford you can stand there believing you have your and the club’s destiny in your hands.

Your words in a ‘heart-rending’ interview in a Portuguese paper yesterday stuck in the throat.

First of all you say: “If there’s one thing I’ve never been — nor do I want to be — it is ungrateful.”

Now, hang on. So Ferguson takes you to the biggest club in the world, converts you from a one-trick pony into the greatest player in the world, then you repay him by announcing you want to quit Old Trafford. Not ungrateful?

You added: “I never wanted to leave against United’s will.”

It was clear from the off United never wanted you to leave yet you led them this merry dance until realising the game was up.

So it goes on. Your commitment to the club is obvious because you have bought a big house in Alderley Edge. You were having that built at the start of the year.

Ferguson has — as ever — tried to defend you, despite this summer of madness. His best defence was that your head was turned by the money on offer.

But then you say “. . . money isn’t everything” and add that if it was it would have been easy to stay at United.

You drivel on about what a special place United fans will always have in your heart.

Well, you might get a bit of a shock the next time you trot out at Old Trafford.

Because living in this great city I know exactly what the red half thinks of your winking antics since the European Cup was lifted.

Many United supporters are fed up with you, Ronaldo. Many wanted United just to take the cash, re-invest it and move on.

Because United fans are not brought up on fly-by-night big-time Charlies. They are brought up on legends who devote themselves heart and soul to this club. They are brought up on the stories of the Busby Babes.

And of course more recently of great servants like Roy Keane and those still plying their trade — like Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs.

Which is why there has been no popping of champagne corks.

The view of many was ‘Good — but he should never have tried to leave in the first place’.

The situation can be seen as a victory for Ferguson and for clubs against the increasing strength of player power.

Yet I wonder if we will see the real Ronaldo again in a red shirt.

Let us not forget all this is likely to start again in a year’s time.

For, while saying you are staying, you also made it very clear you wanted to go to Real Madrid and still do.

So, with that in mind, how can you really commit yourself to the United cause? After two titles and a European Cup you claimed that in five years at the club you had won everything there was to win. You tack on, of course, your host of personal honours.

Can you imagine someone like Keane or Neville saying this?

Or Giggs, who has 10 title medals and so many others that he needs a reinforced sideboard to hold them all?

The reason United have been so dominant in the last 15 years is because players like them won a medal and immediately forgot about it, setting their sights on the next target.

Keane was the heartbeat of this club for a decade. A United hero.

The club thought he could not be replaced but Ferguson has found a way of rejigging the team to fill the void left by the Irishman. Because no matter how good the players are, Fergie always finds a way to replace them.

He only lets players go if he thinks it is best for the club.

And he has kept you only because he thinks it is best for the club.

Not for him or you — but the club.

Privately he probably wants to stick you in the stand.

You whine: “The Press writes terrible things about me.”

So terrible you were pictured reading it all as your ego forced you on to the pages of this and other papers this summer.

Like the fans, the Press who cover this club are brought up watching legends.

And, Ronaldo, you will never be one of them.

Good article.

I'll support him as he's a United player but I won't hold him in such high regard. When he does leave I won't shed a tear, just hope he continues to bang the goals in in the meantime.

Some would say that they're a one man team and if Man UTD's results until Ronaldo is fully recovered aren't satisfactory then after a few games people will pine for him. He'll then return with the status of a saviour should he then pick up where he left off from last season.

I think fair play to him in some sense for wanting to move away. He's won pretty much what he can and what's worth winning at Old Trafford; player of the years, back to back league titles and a European Cup. Why shouldn't he leave for another league and another team to do it again (possible?).

Gone are the days of Giggs, Adams i.e. players loyal to one club people have to accept that. Arsenal made Flamini and he buggered off for more moolah. It just happens. Ronaldo may not have gone for reasons out of his control, but it's not like he didn't have a go ;)

Two words, Neil Curtis.

The day i agree with that ****ing idiot is the day i stop watching football and take an interest in Athletics :/

The article is sensationalist clap trap. Ther vermin of fleet street have about as much in common with Man United as I have with the Queen Mum. Of course the knives were going to be out for Ronaldo. Nothing sells papers like bad news, gossip, opinion made into fact and a pinch of lies for good measure. But thats enough of me sitting on the fence about the daily red tops.

Most of the long standing United fans will be indifferent to him. Since I started watching United in the early 80's, the rule was win, loose or draw always back the players as long as they give 100%, respect the shirt and respect the fans. Nothing much has changed in that for your average Joe from Salford, Longsight, Gorton etal. They probably won't sing but they won't boo him. As a player he will get respect as long as he does what he has committed to do and that is honour the shirt and give 100%. As a person I don't think most United fans could give a flying fig about him. But let's look at some of the facts

  • Since joining us he's always said he has wanted to join Real Madrid
  • This summer he has never demanded a transfer
  • 99.9999999% of what has been attributed to him, people close to him and United has been without foundation
  • All the noise was coming from Marca on an almost hourly basis
  • United have maintained he would stay at the club this year

So from the start of summer the press have been absolutley 100% sure he would be going to Madrid. To be fair to Ronaldo one of his only statements is that the issue was between Madrid and United and he wanted to make sure Untied were suitably compensated. Other than that it has always been "A source close to the player" or " A Friend of his dear Uncle" as the source of the information.

Now the two biggest parties that look absolute mugs in all of this are Calderon and his smug grin and the press in the UK & Spain. It's no suprise that the likes of the old currant bun are coming out all guns blazing to make Ronaldo look the bad guy in all of this to make up for "Yet Another SUN Exclusive" that has come back to bite them on the arse.

Ronaldo is not without blame but as he has said as much this week, he would have been a hypocrite to say anything to the contrary. Maybe respect is bit strong but give me that any day over a player who decalres undying love for his club, kisses the badge on his chest and then a few weeks later nearly joins one of their biggest rivals because he has seen the colour of the money.

Dont see what the problem is, I'd give him 48 hrs to commit either way or make the decision for him, simple as.
ps am not a fan, just looking at it simply

Yes, but is he as good as Zidane?

Different players for different positions. My opinion is that in his prime Zidane was the better player as he achieved more and played at a consistley high level for a number of years

I would have got rid of him. He wants to leave so why keep him at the club. Get as much money for him as possible now. He might not be as good this year you never know

I'd rather him sold now, if you dont want to be at our club, then leave please sir. I also think he should have been sold before all this contreversy, it was turning into Ronaldos United (very much like Henry did with Arsenal) where hes expected to do everything and almost pick up the slack. Its not going to be that way now though after some things have been said, quite the opposite I feel.

Either way I would rather he went and Tevez/Anderson/Nani were given the chance to shine.

If he's true to his word and plays with all of his commitment, then I'm glad he's staying. He may have said some dumb things - but he's still one of the best players in the world, so why wouldn't you want him in your side?

I'm with Loki, the article is as much sensationalised paper talk crap as most of the stuff that's come from Marca and AS and the like over this summer.

All he ever said was he'd like to play for Real, but only if the club are willing to sell him. We knew that already.

He's gone down in my estimation because he hasn't got the sense to know when to keep his mouth shut, but I'll keep supporting him, because he's a great player, and because he wears the red shirt.

Neil Custis is an idiot and a fraud. What he's saying is nothing more than sensationalist drivel. Cannot stand the man of the crap he writes.

Neil Custis thinks he can speak for the Man Utd fans does he? Rubbish, the true fans like myself and those that I know certainly don't agree with him, and most ignore the rubbish he writes anyway.
Loki, G|mp and andi are all spot on.

Will I be supporting Ronaldo next season? Bloody right I will, he's a United player and I support each and every one of them.
Except for Silvestre.

I can not understand the mentality of blind faith/support.
Yes, he is a United player.
That doesn't make him immune from judgment or opinion.
His attitude has been disrespectful and arrogant. He doesn't deserve our support.

Complete claptrap - but then what else do you expect from that "writer"

I have lost a little respect for Ronaldo, because HIS direct comments have contradicted each other just over this summer (just after the CL Final " Of course I stay" within weeks it was " Everyone knows what I want, to play for RM)

He wont be back to his best until next season I think, but even 70-80% of what he did last season is still a damned fine player

I will still support him as long as he now gives 100% on the pitch when he plays - and I have no doubt he will do that

If he had gone, yes Utd may have initally stumbled, but no player is bigger than the team - we got over Cantona, Keane RvN - we WILL get over it when Ronaldo leaves, which is bound to happen its just a matter of next summer or the summer after

I have no issue at all with his boyhood dreams - its to be expected where he comes from. The way he presented himself this summer (Im only talking about direct quotes I actually heard him state) was disappointing
