Russia Invades Georgia?

[*]Georgia (not Russia) is at fault here; she invaded South Ossetia (internationally recognised as a separate independent entity) with the intention of bringing the entire state under her own control; Russia has merely responded in support of South Ossetia

Who does? USA? EU? OSCE?

[*]Russia hasn't "invaded Georgia" per se; she has entered Georgia in defence of South Ossetia

I thought Ossetia was Georgian territory?

I thought it was the case that only Russia recognise them as independant and internationally, it is recognised as part of Georgia?

The United States, the European Union, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Nato all issued statements before the 12 November vote that branded the referendum meaningless and unhelpful

So the wider international community did not recognise the 'vote' in SO.

[*]South Ossetia's legitimate status as a breakaway state

What legitimate status is this?

helps to explain why Russia has asked the USA for assistance in defending her; this is not a purely domestic issue, but one of international law

Russia has asked the USA for assistance? Can you cite a source for this? According to leading News Agencies it is Georgia and NOT Russia who has asked for the assistance of the USA?

This region seems to want to be a part of Russia though, and are for the most part independent right now.

No it wants to be reunified with North Ossetia. Ossetia is not the region I am referring to though the region is the Caucasus and North Ossetias direct neighbours are Ingushetia and Chechnya. Abkhasia is also rebelling against Georgia also Dagestan is not exactly stable at the moment. Do you really believe none of these places will agitate or activily involve themselves. That whole area is just waiting for the right ignition for it to go off big style (just like the Balkans did in the 90s)

More people die in wars else ware than this little region, do you really care about them? And i mean really not a ooo poor them while their on the news but do you ever really think of the people all over the world currently at war?

Yes I do, the state of Africa is one of the biggist crimes of the 20th/21st Century, much of it down to the collonial interests of the so-called civilised powers (and yes I know it's also ethnic and historical tensions of various tribal groups as well).

Anway I have places to be and I suspect on this one there would likely be virtually nothing we could agree on, but that's why I'm glad I live where I do because we can all have our opinions.;)

I think it's disgusting that troops from one country can just walk into another under the pretense of liberating the resident population...

This thread is funny! :)

This has been boiling up for months. They have been crying fowel of Russian jets in their airspace for some time.

Really hard to see which way it will go.

The time to really start worrying is if/when the Americans land troops in Georgia until then its just a skirmish ;) .
