Russia Invades Georgia?

South Ossetia may be a distinct entity, but that's quite far from being a separate entity and nothing close to being a sovereign state. As far as the UN is concerned South Ossetia is Georgian territory. Whether that's the reality on the the ground is clearly a contentious point.

Nevertheless, South Ossetia has been violently invaded and Georgia is attempting to bring it under her control.

Yet people in this thread are supporting Georgia. I don't understand why.

Who does? USA? EU? OSCE?

I said separate entity, not separate state. It is ethnically distinct from Georgia, which is currently trying to preclude full independence by violent means.

An act which certain people on this thread appear to support, for reasons I cannot hope to comprehend.

Russia doing a sneak attack during the olympics, clever! Gotta support Georgia on this one, Russians have been trying to cause trouble for a while now.

Laughed when the bbc reporter said president putin

Becuase South Ossetia is territory of Georgia and is part of Georgia. It is recognised as such by the international community.

I dont understand how you can dispute this?

"I saw bodies lying on the streets, around ruined buildings, in cars," said Lyudmila Ostayeva, 50, who had fled with her family to Dzhava, a village near the border with Russia. "It's impossible to count them now. There is hardly a single building left undamaged."

The Ossetian leadership disagree, rightly or wrongly.

its still a small conflict though...

This is not just another irrelevant (to us) minor conflict, there is a real possibility that this could spiral way out of control extremely quickly. To disregard that possibility on the basis that its currently a small conflict is very narrow minded.

Caught the end of channel 4's news coverage, which was this statement:

"...and russian peacekeepers have been fighting fiercely."

Gave me quite an image in my mind..

"Hey Dimitri.. its good we keep the peace no?
"Of course Boris.. but I dont think they are peaceful over there.."
"Well if we kill them first it will be peaceful again..?"
"Good point Boris.. FIRE!!"
