Today's news is brought to you by the websites All Project Stats, BOINCstats and Team Starfire World BOINC Stats ‘N Stones.

Production is obviously down this week due to our collective efforts in Rosetta, resulting in Team Art Bell falling off the radar. But apart from Team Starfire World BOINC, the chasing pack haven't really made much headway, which surprised me somewhat :)

As ever, a warm welcome to our newest members! And as always, a big congrats to all the tiffy winners! Don't forget to get 'em out, and if I’ve missed anyone then just give me a prod.

Thanks for the stats, as usual. And I'll just whip this out:

For anyone interested, Astropulse WUs have started to be distributed but can only be automatically downloaded if you're using the standard client. For those using optimised apps (hands up who aren't!), you need to modify the app_info.xml file (in the BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu folder), as well as downloading various files and the Astropulse executable.

The app_info.xml modification is simple. Stop BOINC, open app_info.xml and paste the following just below <app_info>:

<app>
<name>astropulse</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>astropulse_4.35_windows_intelx86.exe</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<file_info>
<name>libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<file_info>
<name>ap_graphics_4.35_windows_intelx86.exe</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>astropulse</app_name>
<version_num>435</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>astropulse_4.35_windows_intelx86.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll</file_name>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>ap_graphics_4.35_windows_intelx86.exe</file_name>
<open_name>graphics_app</open_name>
</file_ref>
</app_version>

Save the file. You then need to download the following files (right-click and Save As...):

astropulse_4.35_windows_intelx86.exe
ap_graphics_4.35_windows_intelx86.exe
libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll
ap435.jpg
astropulse_4.35_AUTHORS
astropulse_4.35_COPYING
astropulse_4.35_COPYRIGHT

Place all these files in the BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu folder. Then restart BOINC, and hopefully you should be good to go! You may not get an Astropulse WU straight away, but if everything's right then you'll get one eventually.

A word of warning though: Astropulse WUs take a lot longer to crunch than the regular WUs, reportedly sometimes well over a day on a decent rig and obviously much longer on slower systems. Deadlines seem to be about a month though, so most users here should be alright.

I guess the big question is what sort of PPD do you get on the Astropulse WU's compared to the normal ones and are they doing more/better science? :)

PPD?? That's foldy lingo! We'll have none of that round here thankyouverymuch! :mad: :D

In theory they earn the same credit per second as the standard WUs, so Astropulse WUs would claim credit of several hundred cobblies. However, I think I remember someone on the SETI boards saying that his RAC dropped substantially when crunching AP WUs. Also, there are currently issues with AP WUs getting zero credit, but that's a problem with the Astropulse validator and credit will be granted manually.

And yes, they do more science:

What is Astropulse?

Astropulse is a new type of SETI. It expands on the original SETI@home, but does not replace it. The original SETI@home searches for narrowband signals, as does a conventional AM or FM radio. Astropulse, on the other hand, listens for broader-band, short-time pulses.

Damn. My first AP WU failed because the AP app couldn't be found. A quick check found that the AP files that I could've sworn I put in the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder weren't there :o. So if you're an optimised app user wanting to crunch Astropulse WUs as well, double-check to make sure everything's in place!

Fingers crossed that the next one plays nice!

Well I can't get any work from Berkeley re. Seti :( or upload any results and looking on the Seti forum it seems their system is having problems yet again!

Been like that a couple of days now so leaving my home PC crunching Rosetta instead.

Might leave Seti for a few months as they seem to be having problems almost every week now either with their servers or comms.

well, wrt to the credits, my first large non beta astropulse unit just completed; considering the machine is doing nothing but crunching, albiet jumping a lot between projects, and isn't the biggest in the amount of ram... a comparison between a normal wu and the astropulse one:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=4100361

basically:
astropulse:
405135 seconds claiming 715.15 credits
setiathome non optimised client:
14949.67 seconds claiming 59.59 credits

simple maths (as its the same machine), of credits/time, says that the normal wu claims roughly twice (and a bit) as much as the astropulse for amount of time spent.

Thanks for the news TT. Impressive tiffy Meridian:)
Not a bad week for me despite these awful 18 pointers. & I got sent some more today:( Getting there slowly.

I was afraid of that. Ah well, if it all goes atropulse then we are all in the same boat. I still wonder why they didn't roll it out as a separate project astro@home or something.

But how does this compared to an optimised client? That knocked 1/2hr -40 minutes off a wu for me. Sounds like a lot <points:confused:

Erm, is there an optimised client for Astropulse already? I used the non optimised seti client, which means that an optimised seti client will take less time and claim about the same amount of points, making the astropulse wu even worse credit/time wise.

edit: have to say that during this time of outage, it is good to have an astropulse wu....

Or a Rosetta one :)

People have to remember, this has happened before with S@H, twice if my memory serves me. WU processing requirements increased hugely causing much consternation until the hardware caught up :)

I meant the optimised std client, which I'm using so Astropluse would be a big hit to my prodution. Glad using the optimised client stops these from dowloading:)

Hey :D

I dunno how to get included in the stats, but i was folding non stop till my GPU client beta ran out... but now got the new one so will be folding non stop for us!

Currently sitting here in the Team stats...

Hope to progress up the ranks :D Nothing spectacular tho, only running a 3870 on a 3.1 c2d :(

EDIT** My bad, posted in the wrong thread! :( Sorry ppl!

Well finally getting a trickle of WU from Seti - 1st I've had since last Thursday so my score over last week is going to be virtually nil :(

O well at least Rosetta is doing well :D

2 days of not much and three days of nothing at all for my stats. Unless its sorted out before the weekend I guess the numbers are all going to be low this week :(

Off up to Durham for the weekend tomorrow, catch up with some family and bring my mum into the age of the internet with broadband and a laptop!! Shes a complete Internet and laptop noob!!

...and bring my mum into the age of the internet with broadband and a laptop!! Shes a complete Internet and laptop noob!!

Hmm, do I sense a pending borging session? :D

And you're right, the stats are pitiful this week. It's the same across the board though, so it's the same difference really.
