Basically end of year or by the time iam 21 (in may sadly) i would like to buy my 1st car- paid for by me (eg not lynching off parents policies, etc)

so looking for ideas or suggestion, want something that handles well, as ive felt the cars i have driven so far have been crap at that. But no looking for a supped up 1.2 corsa, but yet also realise i basically cant have an monaro or something.

Random car history past.

1.8 16v vectra auto (1st car driven)
1.4 (???) deisal something C4
1.6 16v honda concerto- love this car apart from twitchy back end which put me into a wall. =[
1.4 escort - just dont like it at all.

for me the power....well want more than the escort, just more poke really, something with more response, compared to the 1.4 when ive driven my brothers 1.6 16v its felt fine, and when driving the vetra now also enjoyed having the option available to me (the escort is off the road at the moment)

budgets....
3.5k max
1k on the insurance
and tbh fuel isnt that important, it'll prob end up sitting in the driveway or carpark/road for 30odd weeks of the year while iam away at uni, and only used as the (some times dreaded) "weekend car"

ive got ideas, was kinda suprised, to learn that a 1.6 civic sport (i think it was that) from uhm.....infact got no idea, but it was the newer one, not the latest, could fit into my budget- to buy and insure.
stuff like mini (heard the drive in them aint that good) and alfa 147s can also fit into my buying budget.

but would also consider "older" stuff, eg late 80's early 90s. i would think sooner than that would need to be something special in either drivability or looks department

so yeah. throw serious suggestions at me please =D

don't think the new mini will be anywhere near your budget? hmmm.

Civic VTI-s, 306gti-6\Xsara VTS

all of them fairly quick, not TOO bad on fuel. not sure on the handling of the civic, but the 306/Xsara platform is a very good one ;) very fun drive :)

all well within your budget, should all be under a grand on insurance aswell at 21...

best value for money would prob be the Xsara out of them. 2.5-3.5k will see a low mileage '04 plate VTS with all the mod cons. the '6 stopped production in 2001 though so these can be picked up for less but generally harder to find a decent one. practically the same car.

edit: ooo also the clio 172 should fall under that budget now, the early ones will anyway, great car too :)

......mx5 fits the bill perfectly tbh, uber fun, not expensive to buy insure or run and if you dont need practical it's great :D

jesus, no idea they were that cheap already! interesting...

edit: haha, within 100 miles of me the cheapest one is 5.5k :( and thats a standard mini one on high miles

ooh yeah, totally forgot about the mx-5 as i was looking for when i was turning 20, then realised i would have ike no money at all.

and i realise the cooper s is the cheapest...but.....uhm...sssh!

uhm....wasnt driving like a loon, she suffered from a twitchy back end, went round a corner ive went round a billion times before (and at greater speeds) and due to wet just slid out and crahsed into it. The school janny (yes it belonged to my shcool) said i was the 4th person alone that week that it happened to. And he obviously wasnt saying that to make me feel better since I've never seen him in school and I wasnt in my uniform.
In the same car the twitching also happened to my bro and mum, and allways protested she shouldn't do that and i felt unsafe at times when driving....also happened on the motorway after hitting a damp patch but mum was able to recontrol the car.
