I notice a lot of people say that they prefer to use hi fi speakers over pc ones.

How do these connect up and what cables would I need to buy?

I am a complete notice in the area of sound with computers.

Thanks

I have just bought the Aego M series last week from ocuk and am very impressed with them.
I run them off the motherboard onboard sound card and to connect them you just need the cable thats a 3.5mm jack into your line out to 2 x phono on the back of the sub.
I dont miss having an amp at all

OP asked for Hi-Fi speaker, not some crappy PC speakers.

Something like the NAD C315BEE is suitable, when browsing look under " Integrated Amplifiers"

I had an old Kenwood Pro-Logic receiver doing nothing and I was listening to the PC on a £15 pair of plastic boxes. Yuk! So I invested in a small pair of bookshelf speakers from a discount retailer. Add a few cables as badbob suggests and I have a 70+70W stereo system sitting on the PC. Yes it's overkill just to listen to a few mp3's but it's soooooo much better than the plastic boxes!

You can get a stereo amp and speakers for under £100, well under if you shop around, and the results are well worth it IMHO.

I have a E-MU 0404 outputting digitally to an old yet surprisingly nice DAC feeding in to NAD C372 Amp outputting to some crappy Sony speakers (very temporary). Using a nice enough cable from the DAC to the amp (cant remember who made it), but rubbish speaker cable as there's no point using decent cable with rubbish speakers.

I got a £30 stereo amp of the old bay, using some sony speakers. The sound is ace tbh

Amp also has multiple input, high and low level output, remote control, bass/treble/balance and headphone amp. Do the Aego? Nope.

doesn't make them bad though, I have gone from an old valve amp and two speakers to the Aego's and Im chuffed to bits with them.
Depends on what options you want and how much you care about fine tuning sound etc

Use most of the features on integrated amp. Headphone, use with Grados. I don't need to trawl round the back or use a splitter cable. No need for X-Fi front panel. Multiple inputs, can switch between PC and MP3 player. Use line out so can record to Mp3 player or tape.

im using an old toshiba amp connected to my PC with mission M72 speakers connected to that

All you need is an amp + 3.5mm to RCA cable

Not the best speakers in the world but better than any "pc speakers" ive used, especially for music....which is all i use them for
