Russia Invades Georgia?

That's got to be the most ridiculous comment in this thread TBH.

Are you even trying to take this discussion seriously? I am honestly wondering.

Why is it ridiculous? The fact is that the unarmed USAF transport planes will have to fly to Georgia, a region where fully armed Russian air force fighter/bombers are operating (if reports from the Georgian government are to be believed). I guess they will fly them to the capital, Tblisi - look on the map, it is not very far from S. Ossetia.

Furthermore, how will this look to the Russians? The old enemy is flying in reinforcements for the force they are fighting on the ground. Tension will be high, mark my words.

You're actually entertaining the idea that the Russians would shoot down a United States aircraft during peacetime, you are either absolutely mad or just making a strange joke.

Err, from what I've seen on the news, things are not exactly "peaceful" in Georgia atm.

I meant peacetime between the Russians and Americans, and I think you knew that.

Of course I did, but it doesn't alter the fact that it's a war zone (perhaps in all but name), and in war zones bad things happen. Remember the NATO bombing campaign in Serbia, and how the Chinese embassy was accidentally bombed? It's pretty naive if you think it's impossible for anything to go wrong when the USAF planes fly into Georgia - I'm sure the USAF won't!

I imagine that if the US expected the Russians might shoot down their plane, even "accidentally", they would ask the Georgians to send their own plane. The US and Russia can not go to war right now.

And obviously the Russians would not be so stupid as to blow up an American plane in cold blood.

1 building in a city at night one thing.

A large American plane in day time with active transponders, less likely to be mistaken for a government building.

Except that the Georgians probably don't have the necessary logistical capability, and the USA probably has an obligation to return Georgian troops to Georgia from Iraq if requested.

No, I doubt that there will be an order to attack the USAF, the most likely scenario is a hot-headed pilot with an itchy trigger finger. I wonder if there are any fighters based in Turkey or nearby that could escort the transport planes into Georgia...

A plane sitting on a runway at a Georgian military air field. No the Russians would never mistake that for something it's not would they?

Why has nobody mentioned the fact that earlier the Russians decided to go and bomb Gori, sovereign Georgian territory, and not just military bases either but two civilian tower blocks?

It looks like Russia are up to their old tricks again, just like in Chechnya. Bomb the crap out of everything and anything. Civilian or military, that distinction never seems to apply to the Russians.

You said shoot down, Can't really get much more down than on the ground :/

They will make sure the Russians know where they are, or drop them some where out of the way.

The Georgians are firing artillery at hospitals and fire bombing civilians.

Yet you don't seem to have a go at them?

Russian jets targeted major oil pipeline

TBILISI (Reuters) - Russian fighter jets targeted the major Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline which carries oil to the West from Asia but missed, Georgia's Economic Development Minister Ekaterina Sharashidze said on Saturday.

"This clearly shows that Russia has not just targeted Georgian economic outlets but international economic outlets in Georgia," she said at a news briefing.
