I recently got into Texas Hold’Em Poker, I’m still learning every single game I play. I know all the possible hands back to front, however there are still many rules I don’t yet have the grasp of. Please stay with me on this, there’s quite a few questions but if I can get them answered I can finally understand the rules of Poker, or at least begin to understand them properly.
I have played quite a bit of online poker, so things like dealing, big blinds and small blinds are done automatically by the CPU, so I’ve never really known how they work or how they’re ordered.
For now I don’t really want to know about when to fold and when to raise and so on, I just would like to know whether I’m playing properly and if I’m doing anything wrong. I’ve read tutorials on poker but they still don’t answer my questions like I’d like them to.
To understand the game better I set up a little real game (NoLimit) between my brother and I using 2p coins so we could sort out how big blinds and small blinds work (I know 2 player Hold’Em sucks, but it’s all I have to work with). This is how we played:
SB – 2p
BB – 4p
We each got dealt 2 cards. Now I’m guessing I was the SB and he had to be the BB so there’s money in the pot and I’m also guessing that this changes around next game so I’m the BB and he’s the SB, please correct me if I’m wrong about this.
He dealt the cards so I made the first decision, am I correct in saying I could either Check, Raise, or Fold? Or do I HAVE to bet (or fold if I choose to)?
I decided to bet 2p and added it to the pot. Now he has the choice of Calling, Raising or Folding, is this correct?
He Called my 2p, so he added 2p of his own to the pot, is this correct?
Now that this round of betting and what-not was done (we decided to do one round of betting, can this be lowered of highered depending on how you want to play the game?) we then placed 3 community cards down. Is it now my turn or my brothers to bet/check/fold? Does it matter? I decided to go and Raise to 4p because I had a good hand (could I have checked this instead of betting?) he called the raise, is this correct?
We carried on like this until the river.
There’s a lot more I’d like to know, but hopefully you understand my questions, I can’t really put them any differently. I know the best way is probably to be taught by someone who knows what they’re doing but unfortunately I don’t have anyone like that to teach me.
Any help or pointers or websites would be great.
Thanks.
