United Fans on Ronaldo

I have no problem with him to be honest. i didn't like what was going on but we all know how the media works with regards to 'close sources' and agitating these things. i don't think ronaldo has been innocent in the matter and i'd have liked the whole thing to have been put to bed a lot sooner. however fergie has always seemed very confident that ronaldo wouldn't be going anywhere and generally that's good enough for me.

Personally, I accept that Ronaldo wants to play for Madrid one day. it's pretty much been a stated goal of his since he's got here and he's always been quite open about it. I wouldn't have liked it to have been this year but should he move when he's 27/28 i'll bear no ill will.

oh and lol at custis being the voice of the common united fan.

Ronaldo just looks, to me, like a spoilt little brat. He's arrogant, and if you ask me is only in it for the money.

That he's a talented, gifted footballer is without question. But this whole debacle really doesn't do much for football's image at all, but then it's rare that a footballer of this ilk at the top of his game ever does.

Zidane is mentioned in this thread, and it's exactly why for me he will always be a better footballer then Ronaldo. Whether or not he is a better footballer on the field is irrelevant for me. His attitude (ignoring his unexpected retirement present to Materazzi) was above and beyond what football needed. Every time I see an article or piece on Ronaldo it just makes me want to watch football that little less, which is a shame given how skillful he is.

Tbh we should have sold him when the 70 or 80m was on offer, chance are he will have a crap season and we wont even pull 50m next year.

That was NEVER on offer. I don't understand people saying this time and time again, Real Madrid could not afford that much money. They made a bid of £55m, nothing more, Real Madrid do not have as much money as they'd have you believe.

Thats a very good point. Considering the Spanish Royal family appear to be reluctant to offer them an endless pot of money and the council are not willing to do some crazy buy back on the ground over a 150 year leases to ease their financial burden once more. The point is uderlined even further with them spending around £10m on Rafael Van Der Vart. A good player in his own right but it's a big difference between that and some of the crazy money touted on Ronaldo.

Different players for different positions. My opinion is that in his prime Zidane was the better player as he achieved more and played at a consistley high level for a number of years

I never saw Zidane in his early 20's - but surely Ronaldo still has 4 years before being the same kind of age ZZ was at his peak?

His ankle op has probably put paid to this season (in comparison to last at the very least) but even considering that CR has a real good chance of being considered equal to Zizou in the long run

I think Ronaldo will still have an impact for utd this seaspn but i can see him leaving (possibly next season). I think he's got a lot more to do to become regarded as a legend at a club like Man utd.

Without doubt he could go along to be regarded in the same breath as Zidane. I seen him a few times on Futbol Mundial before he moved to Juve and he was an exceptional talent. As soon as he got there then you could tell he was on a stage he could really strutt his stuff.

Ronaldo has time on his side and there are a lot of paralles with Zizou. Whilst a lot of people will say that Zidane won the world cup and Euros between 1998 & 2000, Ronaldo may never achieve that as Portugal dont have the legs to go all the way etc. Fair point. But it's also worth remembering that when France dominated world football in this time, they had been in the international wilderness for many years. Money was poured into Clairefontaine to develop the golden generation of Zidane, Deschamps, Blanc, Karembeu, Makalele, Trezeguet etc. The other footballing heavy weights were in a state of absolute flux. Germany were coming to the end of their generation(Klinsmann, Breheme, Voller, Mattahus etc), Holland self imploded, Spain never turned up and Italy again were rebuilding after Italia 90.

So back to the original question can Ronaldo be as good as Zidane. Well he's got 20 odd goals at international level. Portugal do have the capacity to go onto great things with their current crop of players and a good manager. The problem they have is they have no out and out goal scorer whereas France at their peak with Zidane were probably the complete team. Unfortuantely fans, journalists and critics alike will always take debates like this to the very base level of how many major honours etc as there is no other way to compare them. Zidane performed at the highest level and won the lot. By that simple metric you have to say he's set the standard for Ronaldo to beat.

Long winded answer but hey it's Saturday night, the vino is flowing and I love debating footy :)

You are probably right - from an international point of view, while Portugal have got a very good team and probably a great Manager (Quiroz still has to prove it on his own at the highest level, and Im sure he will) I dont think Portugal are ever going to be a great team, too many average players currently - if a few really step up in the next year or two , so there about 4 or 5 peaking at the same time then there is defiite possibilities, Im just not sure its going to happen

Ricardo esp has to get his mind together (a bit like Barthez) undoubtedly talented and can make world class saves, but can be flaky at times

This is probably what will allow Zizou to keep just ahead of Ronny, thinking about it

Reminds me of the whole Glazer saga and we know how that turned out.

Cant stand Sports reporters, telling me something I know already.

United fans soon forget.
