Books to read b4 you die.........

I think I'll give this 1984 a read, i have no idea what its about but i always see it mentioned.

I could try and explain it because it is a fantastic book but really you are much better reading it and coming to your own conclusions about it. If you want to discuss it once you've read it then start a thread in this forum as there are many, many people with an opinion on it but you should read it yourself initially. :)

day of the triffids - john wyndham

the dark trilogy - phillip pullman

the hobbit - tolkien, much better than the lord of the rings imo

silence of the lambs - thomas harris

red dragon - thomas harris

the client - john grisham

these novels are filled to the brim with win.

I would hardly say The Client by John Grisham was a book to read before you die. It's a standard holiday read....

how so? I admit john grishams novels are a bit samey (ok very samey) but the client was well written and had a great plot easily his best book and he is a good writer. If you were to read only one of his books it would have to be that one.

That's not really the point though. Books to read before you die means books that are worth reading because of their exceptional brilliance or for the wisdom that they might impart....

If it had been movies, the equivalent would have been to say something like "The Rock"....great movie....hardly worthy of a "you must watch before you die" list....

I'm not a buff I haven't read lolita or jude the obscure, but to me it was a great book, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. I'm sure theres people who would regard lolita a boring holiday read.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - great science fiction.

Glad this book was mentioned - this has to be the best book i've ever read. I can also recommend Ender's Shadow by the same author. It's not really a sequel, it's more like exactly the same as Ender's Game but written from the view point of another of the books main characters. Very cleverly done imo :)

I've also always steered clear of the Harry Potter books though after reading some of the comments on here I may just borrow one of them from my 14 year old nephew and give it a try :p

It's not supposed to be a holiday read, that's the point you seem to missing in this thread about books to read before you die.

no, I think your missing the point, I think its great book and one that should at least be read once before you die, I never said it was holiday read, you did. Calling my choice in books "a standard holiday read" is a bit disparaging, just because you feel its below you doesn't mean it shouldn't be read.

more recomendations,

do androids dream of electric sheep - philip k dick

the running man - richard bachman aka stephen king
