Hi guys, dead excited as i'm off to thailand for 6 weeks tomorrow morning. :D

Flying into Bangkok tomorrow via Doha, spending a few days there, then off down to Koh phangan, and koh samui, then down through to Kuala Lumpur.

Hoping to get a PADI done while i'm out there, among other things.

Just wondering if any of you guys have been, what your experiences where, would you recomend doing anything especially, taking anything?

Thanks very much Tom. :)

VERY Jealous

If you're doing the Samui/Pangnan side, go a bit futher north and do Ko Tao - it's AMAZING, plus some of the best diving in Thailand.

Also worth a hop over to the other side and do Kho Phi Phi

In Bangkok, you'll obviously do Kho San Road - stay at the D&D - quite cheap, clean, and right on the road

Don't take many clothes, you'll buy them all out there for pennies

Thanks for the advice. not taking much at all really. got all the necessities and not too many clothes. My pack only weighs about 10 kilos or so.

Duno exactly. Just somit i remember watching on tv about Thailand awhile ago.

there was a Coup or something in 2006 when i was over there but there wasnt much of a threat to any , well tourists anyway

had taxis ,etc searched for bombs by the hotel security each day though

Yeah Qatar airways are my favourites... if you happen to be on a quiet flight they really take exceptional care of you, and even if not, the food is fantastic.

I only spent a little while in koh samui, the rest of it was up in chiang mai, and bangkok for a little bit.

Definitely gtf away from khao san road and explore the city.

Learn this by heart (i've tried to write it phonetically for you)

"May ow kahp"

because you'll be saying it to the endless people trying to sell you stuff/tuk-tuk rides/scam you, but do it with a smile on your face.

Get a lonely planet while you're in bangkok, they're pretty useful but don't be over-reliant on it.

Don't believe people when they tell you things are closed for a holiday / they can take you to a gem shop where you'll make a fortune.

Although ironically, some things may actually be closed around this period because its the Queen's birthday on tuesday, but don't just take people's word for it.

Do your best to learn some thai, it's hard but ultimately very rewarding.

Don't be one of those people who haggle down to the last baht. Most of the people you'll be interacting with make about £1000-2000 a year. Friendly bargaining will get the price down to a fair level, but don't take it too seriously.

When you're on khao san road there'll be a lot women with interesting hats with noisy wooden frogs. Generally they tend to be Ahka hilltribe people... if you want to show off say "Ooh doo tah mah" to them (hello) ... the majority of tourists don't know that.
