which should i go for here? i mainly use the PC for games is there real benefit to games performance from a quad core? or is it better to get a higher clocked duel core?

I remember reading a year or so ago that quad core was not of any real benefit to games players, at least at that point in time, has this situation changed ?

Dual all the way.

The situation has still not changed, quad cores and still not good for gaming over a faster Ghz dual core as not enough games make use of a quad core and the ones that do kinda do it poorly or you'd already be above 60 FPS with a dual so it's pointless. Something like a E8400 for example would be much better for gaming than a Q6600 because it's 600 Mhz faster.

Yep. Duel core is better if you just wanna game.

I do like my quad core, But i like to have the option to do lots of stuff at once :)

dual is the one.
that is till the new intels come out, the end off this year, then I will upgrade to 350 pounds worth off the best cpu and try for 16 gb memory with 2 ssd HD running in raid 0 ,
around march so to allow for prices to balance and tech for the ssds size price etc to get better.

it's 12GB of memory, there will be 3 slots (tripple channel ram), 3x4=12 ;-).

And for the OP, dual, untill everything you use will be able to use quad core at 70%+ or untill the dual isnt enough.

Some ppl may say that some titles or very soon ones are able to use quad core, but then whats the point using it anyways if it uses just few % of the load on each. Like, whats the point of riding a 4x4 cherokee around the parking .... it has the power to go through forest, mountains, sand, dirt, whatever but if you just use it to get to the corner shop around - whats the point ?

its actually 6 slots, so that means 24GB ram

Depends on mobo actually.

Intel spec is 4 slots with the last two as a shared channel.

So you can use 3 slots for triple channel, or 2 slots + combined 2 slots for triple channel.

E.g.

For 12GB you could run:

Slot 1 - 4GB
Slot 2 - 4GB
Slot 3 - 4GB
Slot 4 - Empty

or

Slot 1 - 4GB
Slot 2 - 4GB
Slot 3 - 2GB
Slot 4 - 2GB

Slots 3 & 4 combine to make a 4GB channel that runs with Slots 1 & 2 in Triple Channel mode.

Though as you say some mobo manufacturers have stated that their top end boards may come with 6 slots.

Even if a game is threaded for Quads the diffrence is only small from my experiences, me and a friend was playing 2 games over lan, Gears of War & Devil May Cry 4, both are threaded for Quad, there is little to no diffrence.. if anything to dual seems to perform better. At the cut scenes the Quad is often a few seconds behind the dual. :/

This is a Q6600 @ 3Ghz and a E6750 @ 3.6Ghz btw.. all same hardware apart from the Dual is with a 8800GT and the Quad has a 8800GTX.

Wonder after the new intels come out will will game programmer up the memory usage on there games, cos I guess the min most ppl will have in the systems will be 8gb. So if this is the case 8gb will become the norm, even tho we dont need 8gb. Yeah Ive already got 8gb but im stupid.lol

With Nehalem 3GB/6GB will be the norm i'd imagine.

Much like 2GB/4GB is the norm now.

High end users will prolly go for 12GB.

Only game i have played that really seemed to benefit from a quad was sup com and the difference in that over my duial was very noticiable. In time i guess more games will make use of quad though what else you have in your system will also determine how well quad improves things.

I'am going to filling up my slots with 4gb memory modules if there is six slots all will be filled up. so around March its upgrade time for me also as mentioned above with a newer gpu. I'am transferring 500 pounds to my dont touch bank account to start me off. with the new ssd drives cost and memory cost I will need that to scratch the surface :-)

Just remember Bloomfield will be DDR3 only, which aint anywhere near as cheap as our current DDR2.

Even the cheapest 1333Mhz DDR3 4GB stick is going to set you back £60 or so.

So that would be £360 just on mem if you filled all 6 slots with the cheapest DDR3 you could find...

yep me agree, dont mind as its going to be a very fast PC for me ,
lookin forward to my next upgrade.
