I tend to use dvdpacific for R1 dvd's (generally a 30-40% discount on rrp as standard, and relatively low shipping cost), just be careful to keep individual orders under the customs limit (about $35 at the moment) and use the "ship seperately" option (otherwise they combine what is available from different orders using the other shipping options to try and save you money on shipping).

Rightstuff can have some great offers, but for day to day disks they aren't the cheapest for the UK (shipping is a minimum of $10).

Other than that I tend to use whoever is cheapest in the UK for R2UK disks, most DVD retailers sell them although some are very expensive compared to others (anime-on-line.co.uk sell all sorts of anime/manga, and offer a decent discount on pre-orders, and some great discounts on some items but often aren't the cheapest for stuff that isn't new, or old but middling).

I'm using United Publications for R1 disks, (www.up1.co.uk) and figures/manga. They are not as cheap as the the US sites above, (who I have also used with no issues), but they are in the UK which means shipping doesnt run the risk of customs at all ... also after the first order they ship to the non-card address which I really need. (*)

They are handling the Code Geass situation well to but for any returns its a simple send to them in the UK so easier then dealing with a US company. Figures can take a while to come through, (although my SOS Figma Brigade has Yuki, Haruhi and Kyon so far), but DVDs normally come through reasonably quickly, (I had Maria-sama within a day or so of release), for new releases but it can take a while for older stuff to come through. Only issue I have had is that if you put in two orders in one day then sometimes their system sends you a confirm email for the second one but doesn't register it ... a quick email fixes this.

Emma ... don't know if I'll order season 2 yet .... mainly as i havent got around to watching season 1, I'll probably watch it soon and decide then. I still think the main character looks like a grown up Yomi from Azumanga Daioh tho ;)

Macross confuses me too .... I have Macross Plus and Robotech - The Macross Saga ep 1-36 boxset ... the former I found quite good but the I never really got into the latter. I have no idea how these fit in (or even if they do).

Of the ADV new Oct 08 solicitaions (via Amazon), at the moment the only one I'm considering is All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku: The Whole Kitten-Kaboodle Collection ... but August and September are heavy release wise and I already have Kanon #6 for October ... and who knows what else may be announced this weekend ... :)

(*) the post room at my work currently hate me ;)

I thought, what i'd do was pretend to be one of those deaf mutes...

Are you enjoying them?
I may have to rewatch them sometime :)

Yeah loving them, we're both huge GITS fans anyway... but we'd never really bothered with all of the series shows. I had episodes 1-5 of the 1st Gig before and really enjoyed them so thought I'd splash out and get the third film a week or two ago and then thought what the heck and got the two boxsets.

We've watched all of series one, and are about 2 or 3 disks into series two (2nd Gig).

I love the way that each series is almost like watching on very long movie, with one overlaying story that unfolds over a series of episodes with other little side stories in between :)

The Laughing Man in the first series and The Individual Eleven in the second... very good so far! :)

I think we really need to delve deeper into Anime personally... some stuff we're into, if you guys could make some recommendations.

Appleseed
Appleseed Ex Machina
Ghost In The Shell (1,2,3 + 1st/2nd Gigs)
Dominion Tank Police
Chobits
Cowboy Bebop
Akira
The Legend Of The Three Kings (not seen this, but my other half keeps raving about it)
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Tales From Earthsea (...so so...)
Princess Mononoke

There's a fair few I've missed, but those are the ones that spring to mind that we either watch regularly or have watched recently... any recommendations based on those would be awesome! :)

I'm continually told by friends to watch Bleach as well, as if it's the best Anime series I'll ever watch... never got around to it yet, whats the thoughts on here?

Nikebee, if you liked Chobits I would suggest DearS for another series with the same sort of feel. I don't know whether you have seen the Cowboy Beebop movie or series but if it's just the movie then the series is good too. Vexille is not bad and along the same lines as Appleseed.

In other news, watched the rest of Beck last night. All in all very good and interesting series which is different from the usual themes. The series is basically about a Japanese rock band starting out and the problems they have. There is (some) good music in it, although what you think of it will depend on your tastes. The characters are reasonably good and the plots not bad. I would say that it whilst it comes with dub and sub tracks it really needs to be watched with subs as there are several plot points and general bits during the series where some of the characters are talking English instead of Japanese and other characters not being able to understand well is used in the plot. I'm not sure how well that would come across in a dub track.

Many thanks, yeah Cowboy Bebop is right up there with GITS for me. Seen all the episodes and the movie, really enjoyable.

I'll keep an eye out for DearS and Vexille, thank you.

Is it legend of the 3 kings, or 4 kings?
IIRC it's had a US DVD release but not a UK one (I think it got a vhs release here, and shown on sci-fi or C4 years ago).

You might like Last Exile, and Bubblegum Crisis from what you've posted :)

Nickbee we had a similar sort of quesiton earlier in the thread so I'm just pasting my response from that - so they may be worth a looksy :)

(* means pretty good in my view).

*Gundam - how can you forget this lot :)
*Rahxephon - mecha though but not your typical style
*Eureka Seven
*Full Metal Panic
*Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 - not mecha in the strictest sense but I think you could get away with it
Dancouga Nova
*Heroic Age - not mecha but similar vein, its giant aliens which look like organic mecha
Sousei no Aquarion
*Sky Girls - maybe a little bit loli but I reckon it could pass as a mecha kind of. I reckon you may like it cos of chobits though
*Soukyuu No Fafner
*Zoids
Super Robot Wars
Blue Gender
Generator Gawl
Gravion (and Zwei)
Kenran Butoh Sai - The Mars Daybreak - its underwater mecha
Macross Series
Reideen
Saint Beast
Tekkaman Blade
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Vandread

I'll add in
rozen maidens - as I've said, one of my top 5 and a very endearing series
ergo proxy - bit different to your normal anime but its pretty good.
elfen lied
Simoun - although theres an aspects which isn't needed the series is pretty good if you can get past the excessive use of the 'girl on girl kissing'
Trinity Blood - steampunk vampire type thing, the ending was a bit of a let down for me but the rest was ok.

I've also seen vexille and although the animation is very good (think appleseed ex machina) the story is no where near as good in my opinion.
Can't really say I'm that interested in bleach, in my opinion its one of those anime that westerners quote as a way of saying they know about anime rather than being a good series, although everyone has different tastes.

Now who can I blame for mention chobits (I looked as I'd never heard of it before), as pervy as it is I'm still watching it and its strangely enjoyable (not those reasons!!)
And for those who have seen chobits, did anybody else actually want the sumomo persocom (the mini purple/pink one) because for some reason I was like I want one (yes I have strange tastes :()

Is there such a thing? I.E.Too much Yuri in an Anime?:D
On another note watched my discs of Oban Star Racers i bought back in Nov and on the second disc the menu is faulty(i mean it plays....13/15/14)
And on the fourth disc it has a 30 second section with no sound and other picture blacking faults(only a few of these though)
Reckon i could get replacements off the manufacturer?I bought them off the `jersey shop` but never got around watching them till now(Well did put them into the player for a few mins when i had them)

Yes the first few episodes of simoun, trust me its not needed in the quanitity it is there.

Agreed, I've got the first couple of disks of this series and I don't know what it is about it but it just felt all wrong. Normally you can get a feel for the characters before then but I really found myself not caring about them at all. Abit of Yuri action can be a good thing but if it doesn't really sit well with the flow of the story then it throws things off.

Andarial, hmmmm .... you'll have left it to long to just return the disks to the vendor I expect. You could try looking at the appropriate section in the AoD forums to see if there is a known issue with thata disk which would make it easier to go back to the manafacturer.

Anyway, going to start Eureka Seven later I think.

Read Rozen Maiden vol #1 and Shrine of the Morning Mist vol #1 this morning (manga) ... both what pretty good, I'll have to look into getting more volumes.

just spotted the oban discs for about £7 each on the rainforest site so i think i will chance a few quid on another set(That will teach me to get pre order and not check immediately the quality of the encode :( )
C`mon guys there is always room for excess Yuri:p:D

Apparently Funimation have confirmed that they will be re-releasing Kanon #1-#5 and a boxset not long after they release #6 (which is due mid-October). I can't recommend this series highly enough.

Sorry yes your right it's 4 Kings, typo on my part... didn't it get called Legend Of The Dragon Kings elsewhere as well? Or is that something different

Don't have Bubblegum Crisis but my other half really likes it and has seen them all. It'll probably be one we'll pick up again as I haven't seen it yet.

Last Exile sounds pretty familiar... Don't think I've seen it but I'm sure I've heard it mentioned before.

*snip*

Many thanks for the list, looks like I'll be loading up on a fair few new titles once we're done with the last few disks of GITS:SAC 2nd GIG.

Chobits? Yeah it's a little pervy :o I really like the stories in it for some reason... and my girlfriend loves Chii and Sumomo and really wants a Persocom :)

We've got the boxset and I think all the books too... Damn it I really want to watch Chobits now! But a mate has got it in Leicester... bit of a treck to go get it from here :o

Just went to the rainforest place to order the set of oban star racers and there is a review saying about the episodes out of order issue i posted about earlier... :(looks like i will keep my existing copy then

I loved it when I got it a while back (the double pack with Voices).

Nikebee.I'd love a Sumomo type persocon as well - if just for the alarm clock function;)
Re Bubblegum Crisis, it's definately worth watching, there is the original OVA series (great animation and good story, with excellent music) from the 80's, and the newer 2030 retelling which is longer and has a slightly more coherent storyline but lost some of the charm of the original (which was very much Blade Runner inspired and pretty dark/gritty).
You can see the trailers here

The R1 set has the Hurricane Live music vids which are fun (most of the songs from the series, some set to existing animation from the series, at least one with animation done specifically for it, and several live segments from where the VA's/Singers performed in concert*).

It's one of the series that i'm really hoping will get a HD release at some point, if it does i'll be buying it again (I've got the original R1 box set).

Edit
Just finished Season 7 of Ranma, which was still pretty good fun, despite some of the jokes becoming a bit repetitive, although it's left me wanting to watch the OVA's and movies now (I'll probably order them next month)
Pretty Sammy is up next I think (I wonder what those in GD who think all anime is porn would make of magical girl transformation scenes:p ).

*Very 80's. Very 80's indeed.

Has anyone seen The Place Promised in our Early Days?

I've just watched it and I absolutely loved it. The animation was spectacular.

Excellent film with very good visuals, thought the special feature on the making of it was very good too ... the comparison of the location shots with the actual film was interesting.

I did, in fact, order the artbook covering this and other work by the same director last week. :)

Can any one recommend me some anime worth watching please?

I'm after something quite upbeat, mature and colourful. I don't really care what it is so long as it's not school based.

I watched Paprika this weekend and loved it, more like this would be great tbh. I was watching Ergo Proxy yesterday but I find it too depressing and boring to keep bothering with.

So yeah I guess I'm after some recommendations like Paprika.

Just got ahold of a 720p version of Sky Blue/Wonderful Days, and am going to get a mate round this week so we can watch it on my new TV, should be awesome, I haven't watched it in 4 years, hehe
