After the cull i thought it necessary to keep an Anime thread going, after all, Anime's a way of life.(an expensive one at that :D ) I didn't post this in the DVD section as previous discussions have gone on to cover all things related to Anime. If a mod (or Werewolf) wants to move it to a different section, please do.

Yesterday I watched Princess Mononoke and I must admit I was stunt by the beauty of this piece. it's like disney cartoon from japan. beautifully done. I recommend it to all of you.

Mononoke is a brilliant film, still remember watching this first time round when my Japanese VHS copy arrived. No dubs or subs just plain Japanese, i couldn't understand what was being said, but i still loved it.

This also comes in handy as 3 more Miyazaki films are released on Feb 22nd. Nausicaa of the valley of the wind, Porco Rosso and The cat returns. All we need now is a decent version or Totoro* ( I've pre-ordered all 3 from DVDPacific so hopefully no tax charges)

* If anyone's got the Feb issue of NewtypeUSA(Vol 04, No.02) turn to page 20. I want that Catbus:cool: (yes i'm a child)

Any ideas for 'beginners' anime? It looks like something I'd be interested in but don't want anything too complex to start me off if that makes sense and doesn't make me sound like I have the IQ of an insect :o It's just it always looks a bit erm.....specialist ;)

2 words. Last Exile. Just been released in this country. Its a 26 episode tv series (don't let that put you off) but for me has to be one of my high lights of 2004. Even managed to get a couple of workmates interested. To the points where they kept bugging me for the "next disc" when i didn't have it yet.
Have a look through the previous Anime thread in the archive, for a full run down.

Before i forget, Total DVD has the first episode on their cover mount DVD (or so i've been led to believe)

Normally they quote "Multi-code/All regions" and complete series of 25 episodes on 3 disc's. These tend to be Chinese copies. TBH i would only buy mine from a decent source, Ebay is not a decent source for Anime, unless you like to fund pirates.

Thinking of getting Urusei Yatsura more for the classicness in it. any good it just seems to be movies or is there a TV show as well?

Brilliant show. Just hope you have lots of money and time. 6 Movies, 11(i think) OAV's and 196 tv episodes, that lot would keep you off the streets. If you start at the movies it sort of drops you in at the deep end, so i suggest you start with the first few episodes of the tv series.

They have been released in the US by Animeigo and in the UK by Anime projects (VHS) and now MVM. Movie 2 was released by CPM in the US but never released in the UK.

Whilst i'm here, did anyone else order the Fullmetal Alchemist "Starter set" from the U.S?
My one went into shipping on Saturday, so i'm hoping it will arrive in the next week or so (it should be customs free as it was only $31.77/£17 for the actual set).
More importantly, is FMA any good as i've bought it blind :p

Mine was shipped on Saturday as well. But i went for the slightly quicker postal service just to compare times with their cheap option. Looking forward to watching this, been reading about it for ages.

Its about time Bandai made a move into the UK. Will have to pick up some of those Gundam movies. Although i will give the 0083:The Afterglow of Zeon a miss as i have the OAV's.

Planetes and Wolf's Rain i will definately get, but i may see if Bandai in the US will do the full boxset as they've been doing with some of their other series.

I'm hoping to read the second Manga series soon (I think it's out as a single TPB), i'm also giving some serious thought to the Battle Angel (I'm half looking forward to the LA film), Eva and Love Hina manga sometime.

P.P.S.
If I were to add a poll to this thread asking what people's favourite licenced anime is any suggestions?
I was thinking Bebop, Love hina, Eva, Trigun, Fruits Basket, FLCL, Hellsing + some others (I think it can go to 20 options)

The Battle Angel Manga is very good i bought the first one as a GN then went onto the monthly release version(those were the days), i didn't go further than about V4(i think). I had the original EVA manga which i believe was one of the first western released to come in the original(Japanese) "flipped" presentation. Although i seem to remember it also came as a normal version. The first dip into an unknown format, now most GN(TPB) come flipped.

As for the poll, may i suggest Last Exile (bet you knew i would suggest that :D ), Tenchi Muyo, Macross (any), GITS.

WereWolf and other DVDpasific users when do you usually place your orders? begining, middle, or end of the month?

As per WereWolf's answer, if i see something i order it. Although i'm still waiting for my FMA set to turn up :( bet the Royail Mail have something to do with the delivery time.

In the good old days a place called "Otaku video" used to get me anything I wanted (everyting from anime and manga to artbooks, framed cels, OST's, toys, posters etc etc). :D They even stocked a lifesize statue of Asuka from NGE - going for a princely £5000!
These days they've gone way downhill though. I doubt they're even still in business tbh.

They are still trading but their posting time is too long same with Anime-on-Line. I use Sheffield Space Centre for all my manga requirements. Their postage can be expensive but its normally next day or day after. Their website shows only a fraction of what they stock, so give them a bell. ALWAYS found them to be helpful and Knowledgeable, they also do standing orders so you never forget when a new volume comes out. It just turns up.

One Piece will premiere on Toonami on Monday, April 11 at 5pm, airing every day thereafter. I am really looking forward to this, as I love the manga and what I've seen of the anime. It'll be great to see it on TV.

Thats good news, always nice to see new Anime on the box. Gives me an excuse to leave work early. Or a better excuse to get SKY+.

Whats even better news is that Porco Rosso and Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind shipped tonight. The only problem is that FMA still hasn't arrived  so much for quicker delivery.

thought i'd give this a quick bump as it's fallen into the abyss :p

I finally got round to watch the first 4 episodes of FullMetal Alchemist over the last couple of days, and have to say it's caught my attention :)
From what little has been seen of the story and the characters it looks pretty good, and with plenty of promise.
I'm glad I bought the LE disc 1, as I had my doubts before, and wasn't sure if it was a wise move :)

I was watching a clip of the opening from Bubblegum Crisis (original OVA's) earlier, and it led me to wonder
Does anyone have a particular opening scene from an anime that they just love, and if so what is it and why?

For me the opening of Bubblegum Crisis OVA1 has to be it, the music, the style, the whole sequence (what is it, 4 minutes?) sets the series up brilliantly, from the first glimpse of the worn out, almost decrepid in places, but futuristic city with the Genome building dominating it, and then on to Priss in a run down night club getting ready for her perfomance.

Don't get me started on FMA. Mine still hasn't arrived  will have to get in contact with DVD pacific see if there is anything they can do.

Bubblegum Crisis OVA1 always has been and always will be the best opening sequence in any Anime. As you've said its a combination of the music and visuals, the way all the characters are shown in their normal jobs. If i remember correctly, isn't this the only Anime that had a different opening sequence for each episode?
This is the Anime that got me into buying music CD's from shows. My first import order was for the Complete vocal collection 1+2. I can also remember buying these on VHS when each episode was £21.99, when they had decent covers, none of this pink rubbish they changed to.

I just rewatched the opening sequence. OMG they dubbed the music. What a travesty, whoever thought this was a good idea needs shooting. I don't care for the Subbed Vs Dubbed issue, just don't touch the music.

I also liked the blatent BladeRunner references. The opening sequence music to using Priss & the Replicants. The original BubbleGum Crisis is still the best version.

Thanks for the heads up Werewolf, will go and have a look later.

Well i finally got my FMA starter pack. Infact i got 2 of them now. After the long delivery time i had a look at DVDPacific's web and noticed it said "Discontinued" so i ordered from another site. That arrived Thursday and the next day the other set arrived. Looking at the box it shows that it cleared customs on 13th Feb but Royal Mail coundn't be bothered to deliver it until 4th March. Going to make a complaint tomorrow, which won't be the first one i've made either.

Having now watched the 4 episodes i must say i like it. Nice storyline intro, animation is nice and crisp, seems the days of poorer animation for TV is over. And Edward needs some anger management :D

All i've got to do now is stop playing WOW long enough to watch Nausicaa and Porco Rosso.

Toonami i think is 903 on ntl digital (I think it's part of the family pack) - come to think of it, i'm fairly sure that was what used to be CNX (Bebop, Tenchi, Outlaw Star etc)

Your right, CNX turned into Toonami but dropped most of their Anime titles. They are (or have) launched Adult Swim, unlike the USA version there's a distinct lack of Anime being shown. One day we will get the chance to see good quality Anime on the TV and only need to buy DVD's for titles we want to see again. Toonami can be found on Sky 621 (i think)

I managed to Watch NausicaA of the valley of the wind. I've waited over 10 years to see this film, (i always missed it when it was shown on TV) i was not disappointed. Truely a classic film. Animation may be a little dated but the storey is just wonderful. Now just have to drag myself away from World of Warcraft to catch up on all the title sitting around that i haven't watched yet.

As already stated One Piece starts on Mon 11th at 5pm. Its also being repeated at 7.30 pm for those who don't/forget to tape it.

On a sad note. Disney are looking at remaking Kiki's Delivery Service. God no!

On a happy note(sort of) Steamboy is not getting a release at the cinema, instead its going straight to DVD on 6th June.

I love RPGs :D So I'll definitely try to track down Inu Yasha then :)
Anime is still something I'm trying to get into, just finding the time and money etc. Hence I'm still keeping an eye on this thread :)

Inu Yasha is not available on R2 DVD (english) its only available on R1 and i haven't heard any news concerning a UK release. But if you do start watching, you'll be advised to stop playing games as its a very long series. Over 200 episodes! enjoy.

BTW is anyone watching OnePeice? its on at an orkward ime for me.

Watched the first episode. Safe to say i won't be watching any more. Totally nafe dub, enough to put me off for life. I know its aimed at a lower age group, but thats no excuse.

Slightly off topic here but does anyone know where once can get Gundam model kits from? I fancy doing something with my hands! (im talking doooown town!)

ta!

-Benny

I get all my gundam kits from Hobby Link Japan You have the usual chance of having to pay duty+vat but if you want the kits its well worth it. Because they are in Japan they get all the new kits first.

In terms of UK suppliers
Gundam Mad just deal in all things Gundam. Not used them myself.

Sheffield Space Centre Long established shop with very good reputation. Normally you have to phone them to find out what stock. This is my supplier of Anime mags and Manga and can recommend.

Comet Miniatures Another shop where you will need to phone to see what stock they have. Have used in the past and can recommend.

If you have deep pockets i can recommend the perfect grade range. They are more complex to build but very rewarding, as the detail & articulation is so much better than the lower grades.

Also there was a giant customs charge note on the front that states "This package cannot be delivered until thes charges are paid" well clearly it can...because I havent :D lol
Got off a £7 charge lightly there me thinks ;)

That happened to me a few months back, what made it even better, the postman just handed me the package with a grunt of "here you go mate" and walked off, saved me £9 :D

Had a bit of a nice surprise yesterday, got Eureka 7 box set and the New Patlabor The Movie super duper version and didn't get hit by customs :D Anyone else getting Eureka 7?

Need to find some time over the weekend and watch a few of the series i have not watched yet, got my head into WOW and haven't watched much Anime over the last year, except the occasional film. So i have GITS:SAC(disc4 onwards). GITS:2nd Gig, Gundam Seed, Full Metal Alcamist, Stellvia, Zone of Enders and some Urusei Yatsura. Bloody hell, thats a lot of Anime to catch up on.

According to a thread on AOD a press release from Beez (Bandai Europe), says they have got the rights for the first Patlabor movies back from Manga*, and it sounds like come June/July we'll be getting a mirror of the U.S. release, new dub, 5.1 sound and probably the Special Edition version with the extras disk, artbook and information book:)

If they do release a R2 SE then thats very good news. Its about time we got the same treatment as the R1's, saying that tho, i'm still buying the R1 SE of Patlabor2 (already pre-ordered)

I'm slowly getting back into the Anime scene. Need to order a few R1 DVD's and the odd Blu-Ray but was wondering the current best place to order these from now. DVD Pacific are currently doing an update so waiting for that to happen, but are these as good as they used to be?

Any box set recommendations? having bought so many single disc series i'm trying to avoid doing this and pick up a bargain a year or two after release.
