I need to get a bike for commuting to work. I have two different routes to go, one is through some woods and the other is along a canal (pretty flat) and roads.

I dont have much money to spare and would like advice on which bike to get and maybe somewhere to get it from. I am only going to be using a few times a week but might be more if I enjoy it.

People keep saying avoid halfords lol

I havent been on a bike for about ten years so stablizers are a bonus :D

A rigid frame & fork MTB should be fine, as well as a hybrid. Tourer also. Just how rough are the roughest bits? If it's quite rough edge towards MTB but if it's all flat prepared paths then go towards a road bike.

Its quite a rough area, loads of steep slopes. But it cuts the distance by half.

Could you give a link an example bike, not sure what MTB means :D

thanks

Think I'll join this thread....

I'm looking for a bike for just going out and about once a week or so, and for going on the occasional mountain bike run if needed.

The cheaper the better :p

Mountain Bike. Something like this

You said it cuts the distance by half, however if your speed is lower when going off road then time might be similar, with a road bike sticking to the road route. Ie usually 18-22mph for road riding, no way you'd be doing that along canal paths due to walkers, dogs etc.

Sorry should have said cuts the time by half. Its all down hill as well, so return journey would be back on canal.

I dont fancy the road as its extremely busy and its scary enough in a car in this area not alone on a bike with the bad drivers.

What would you get from the dreaded halfords as my company have a deal with them

Is the road along dual carriageway? Otherwise riding on road is safe, done a few thousand miles myself. I don't like riding on the A500 or similar.

I wouldn't buy a bike from Halfords though. They stock the GT Zum S2, which is probably what I'd get, for nippy smooth dirt path riding.

I dont have to buy from there but I pay no tax on it from there And get cheaper through work.

Yes there are dual carriageways and some big roundabouts too. What is the least you would pay for a bike? And is it worth considering 2nd hand?

I wouldn't buy a bike less than £250, although ideally around £300. As for second hand not sure, although it may look ok it may have seized components, ie seat post, bottom bracket, steerer/headtube. Also cracked welding maybe if it's been in a crash.
