My 4870 sucks at Crysis on 1440x900 (??)

Hi all,

was playing Crysis on my son's pc that i built months ago, based around, [email protected], 3870 512mb, 2Gb ram, Vista 32 HP.
Crysis running at 1440x900 (19" widescreen), no AA. All running fine until 'The Assault' chapter where it started to lag a little.
So, i decided to copy my saved games onto my newly built rig:
[email protected], 4870 512mb, 2Gb ram, Vista 32 ultimate (fresh install).
Running Crysis on same spec of 1440x900 no AA.....and it blows hard!
Blurry pics, stuttering big time, unplayable really. WTF????
Crysis is just about the only program on the freshly formatted hdd.
Catalyst 8.7 is installed, not the hotfix though, as i can't find it on the net
Don't have Crysis patch 1.1 either.

Aside from these two possible patch fixes, does anybody have any idea why my experience with the 4870 sucks so hard with Crysis?

Love the game, i even bought a 22" tft for this baby, its not arrived yet, but looks like it wouldn't handle 1650x1050 anyways.
Although most people don't have the issue i'm having :(

Thanks for any advice offered.

1) Hotfix is on the 8.6 drivers not the 8.7's, that'll be why you can't find it :)

2) Patch Crysis up, 1.21 is the latest and it fixes a load of early bugs, no reason not to have it on there.

3) Stuttering will more than likely be down to the 2GB of mem, crysis loves memory

4) As for the 'blurryness' are you sure you arn't mistaking Depth of Field for poor graphics?

5) What settings are you running?

Thanks Hex,

Ahaaaaa, is it worth dropping down to 8.6 with hotfix?

Err, yeah, hope the patches work with *ahem* certain games ;)

But on 32 bit, i'll only get another 1gb at most really.

Didn't blurr with the 3870

5) What settings are you running?
1440x900, AA is OFF, all advanced settings on high. Same settings for 3870 and 4870, yet 3870 runs better.

What in game settings have got and are you running with any AA? Try turning everything down to medium then start turning the various options up to high and see which one/s give the biggest performance hit. Will probably be shaders and shadows :)

edit: Hex beat me to it :)

TBH you should be able to run that res all High no fuss.

Patch it up to 1.21, and try the 8.6 hotfix instead.

Thats what I thought, deffo try the hotfix drivers. Incidentally, you haven't got any apps running in the background or maybe kicking in whilst playing the game?

Wasnt there an issue with Crysis saved games and playing them from a previously installed version or moving them between installations ?

If you do have to restart, you can unlock the console commands by creating a config file called 'autoexec.cfg' and adding:

con_restricted=0

Inside it.

Put it in your Crysis dir, then when you load the game all console commands will be available.

Then you can just type 'map whatever' to jump through the game to where you were.

Assault would be 'map harbour' if I remember correctly. :)

Had a similar problem when moving my saved games, only way i got over it was a fresh start of the game.
Lol, with the greatest of respect.....you know where you can stick that! :p
I aint battling through that lot again, i'm sure i'm near the end now. I'm at the chapter after The Assault i think, after the tanks and the railroad, at a bit where a great big gust of wind goes past you as you're about to enter a guarded compound.

:( I can't start again, surely! :(:(

With just 2GB of ram I'd seriously consider going back to XP for your gaming. I tried out Vista recently with 4GB, 3GB, 2GB and 1GB of ram whilst error-checking some dodgy crucial ram and the 4GB and 3GB setups were much more responsive than the 2GB one. Don't even ask about the 1GB :S

Well, if that means what I think it does, go buy the retail version apply patches, and if you then still have problems come back.

Whilst I'm not the type to drone on about piracy, I do think that making it obvious that you're pirating on a forum where that sort of thing is frowned upon is a bit silly.

That's fair comment, and in my defence, i bought it last week, it just hasn't arrived yet. I had this copy lying around and the boys wanted to play it, so i installed it for them, then got hooked myself.
I've even bought a new 22" tft to play with these kind of games, but that's yet to arrive as well. so its not like i'm scrimping on the £16 it cost me to buy.
FWIW i do buy all of my games and when it arrives, i'll patch it up and hope it cures the problem. On occasion i have used 'other' versions until i've got my legit and paid for copy. Kind of, if i like it enough to play it till the end, i'll always buy it.

Thanks HeX, thats a great piece of advice, i'll do that when i get it.
