Asus Rampage Extreme
Asus Striker II Extreme

This is to go with the following:

e6850
4gb ddr2 (hoping to upgrade to ddr3)
BFG 8800GTX
74gb raptor
150gb raptor
300gb raptor (aint got one yet)
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty
Enermax Galaxy 1000W (gonna get one soon)

This is for a gaming rig and i would like to do a bit of light overclocking at some point.

Its a DDR3 board, I got one here :)

You sure it doesnt mention it on asus website, but if it works i believe you:)

Anyway whats the board like, is there any massive threads on here about it:)

Tell me about the cpu level up, it looks too good to be true for noobs on overclocking :)

Christ don't be spending 250 quid on a motherboard and then using the automatic overclocking.

Especially Asus's software.

With a board like the Rampage Formula it is a sin not to do it properly via the bios. You will likely see much better results and it's more of a sense of achievement.

Have you got the other bit's already? If not for god's sake don'y go buying old tech such as the E6850 and 8800GTX. Go for a Wolfdale and a ATI 4870. I certainly would'nt be getting Raptors either. They are stupidly expensive, noisy and hot. Samsung F1's are the ones to go for as they are very close to the Raptors on performance. You also do not need a 1000w psu. Nowhere near that much. In fact you are not likely to need that much ever for a normal rig.

Parts i already own:
e6850
4gb ram ddr2 6400C5
8800gtx
sound card fatality
74gb raptor
150gb raptor

All good parts and not worth changing at all, so all i need really is a better psu and mobo.

At the moment i got a enermax 650w psu, but i really believe it wont be enough for a SLI/Crossfire setup for much longer. And i thought if i got a really good psu then i wont have to bother for a very long time.

Your psu is fine. People are powering sli 8800GTX with quad cores, all overclocked on Corsair 520w psu's so you have some leeway yet. My rig, in siggy, only draws 257w at the wall and that includes water cooling, speakers and monitor.

Ok so how about this then:
High end cpu
8gb ram
SLI/Crossfire High end cards
3-4 hard drives
sond card

Would 650w still be enough, i really am asking cause it seems a bit low, these graphics cards are getting very power hungry. What if i wanted to crossfire the new 4870x2 when they come out would my psu hold out?

If you wanted to crossfire a pair of X2's then you would probably need a new one as it's basically 4x 4870's. However, you would need to play on a 30"+ monitor to see any advantage and then one X2 will probably be enough and your psu would cope. I have a a Q6600 in this rig clocked to 3.8Ghz and it still only drew 365w at the wall. Stick with what you have until you find it can't handle it anymore then buy a new one.
