Did anyone else see this one?
It made me smile... well I felt sorry for the poor guy who lost his PS3, but the last line or two made me smile ;)

Stolen PS3 tracked through PSN

Dustin Waller is a lucky man: his fiancee bought him a PS3 at a Cleveland games retailer. Sure, it was used, but she had known that Waller wanted a PS3 for so long. Too bad the used system she purchased turned out to be stolen.

Police appeared on Waller's door after the purchase, and they inquired as to how he had come across the system. According to the Salisbury Post, the police were able to track the system whenever Waller turned on his system. The original owner of the PS3's PSN ID was still stored on the system, and it was set to auto-login when the system turned on. By tracking Waller's IP address, they were able to find him.

Waller is of course innocent in the whole debacle, but police confiscated his system nonetheless. While the police look for the person who sold the stolen system to the games shop, Waller was given compensation from the store he didn't want: an Xbox 360. "Waller is appreciative of the offer from the store but notes the Xbox isn't nearly as expensive or sophisticated as the PlayStation."

[Thanks, jimb!]

EDIT: Cool, my post is 1337 too ;)

he does have a point about the price though, its a bit poo. You'd have thought the shop having sold him stolen goods would have given him a different PS3.

Dunno what the laws are in America, but over here he'd be entitled to a full refund.
I'm surprised the retailer didn't offer him a new one to avoid the possibility of litigation, they do like that sort of thing in America.

Eh? Why offer him something different to what he bought. If he wanted a 360 his missus would have got him a 360. The store owe him what he paid for, a PS3. It's their liability. If it were me, I'd be kicking up a huge fuss - and if I was American I would have already contacted a lawyer who no doubt would have filed a lawsuit for about 4.5 million dollars.

Trying to avoid the PS3 vs. 360 wars here so I'll tread lightly.

I'd be pretty ****ed off if my Lotus Elise got stolen and the police gave me a G-Wiz by saying "well it's a car isn't it?"

Yes, yes it is... now give me the rest of my £20k in cash please...

:-/

yea i too would have been pretty ****ed off if they had given me a 360, based on the value alone :/

bet you 2p that the shop did give him a full refund or replacement, the xbox 360 comment was just made up to make the story seem a bit more interesting.

I really do hate it when idiots say stuff like...

"Waller is appreciative of the offer from the store but notes the Xbox isn't nearly as expensive or sophisticated as the PlayStation."

It's classic Sony marketing, with the Cell hype and what not. Heck I remember in the purple shirts shop in 2004 one of the assistants was ranting on how the PS2 was much more powerful than the Xbox!

Proof that it's working!
(Not the power of the Cell CPU, but Sony's marketing)

If "normal" people are believing that Sony consoles are a lot more powerful off the back of the marketing, then the marketing dept have done a good job, and that's a few more consoles off the shelves!

Vin.

Yep! It's why I can't stand some forums, full of kids going on about how the Cell is going to be such huge leaps and bounds, I remember when people were comparing Crysis and Haze screenshots. :D:D:D

I do believe that there will be huge leaps and bounds in the future.
It's early days yet, but stuff has improved no end, since the initial stuff ;)

I bought a PS2 within a month or so of launch, and the early titles were crap. I wondered what the hell I bought one for, and devs complaining that it was hard to write for. They did well after a few years though!

Maybe 2009 will be the year of the PS3! ;)
Or a delay, 2010 then!

The Cell has shiny SPUs don't you know!! :p

Vin.

Aslong as it was a New Xbox 360, In place of the preowned PS3 then fine.

But I'd be annoyed otherwise.

I'd be annoyed anyway.

If I'd bought a PS3 as that's what I wanted, and got some games and blurays, and then this happened, and the shop gave me a 360, that I hadn't wanted, I'd be quite miffed. Especially considering that the 360 isn't as sophisticated!

Vin.

EDIT: Actually, in all seriousness, I think I'd just be miffed anyway, regarding the whole stolen business. I like the fact they tracked the console down though. I like that the original owner obviously reported it, Sony noticed his PSN ID still logging in, and went through the motions to get the IP address traced to an address..... imagine if you'd had your PS3 half inched, and you went to a mates place, and saw yourself log in... what message would you send? ;)
