Another day, another bunch of wannabe psychologists making a fool of themselves :p

As a pose to wannabe Car Critics

Cars serve their purpose for whatever reason the owner wants it for, now a Cupra is no good for street as he needs an Economical work horse.

Plus on the 70% topic I seem to remember you advising him to get a E46 330d if i'm not mistaken :D

****Plus just to be a pedantic idiot BMW is an abbreviation not a word**** ;)

Have you actually done those to start with?

No, he hasn't, which is the point really. Nobody ever bothers - they just assume that becuase its lower tax and 'more economical' it will save them lots of money.

Anyone who tries to tell them otherwise gets told they are anti diesel or has some plank bang on about Mondeos in a vain attempt to be a comic genius.

am i the only one to say this but its hardly a step up from a focus tdci

its newer, thats it TBH.

13k for a car with no leather, xenons, sat nav??

cudda got a st220 with all of these for 6k then had a really nice holiday and house extension ect..

sorry to sound nasty..

They are noisy, shakey and unrefined. A diesel makes a car a utility vehicle in most cases.

oh noes you didnt just go there... :p

go on, mention he'll need a new turbo and injectors within 100k ;)

One day you will look back on your slow diesel French car and cringe when you see how much you bigged it up. Trust me, I speak from experience :(

You shoulda got a VTS ;)

its just not worth even mentioning it with someone like Fox, don't fuel his anti-derv material! :p

I'm not anti derv I'm just not 'omg diesel is like amazing omg mpgzzzz lol' like the rest of you seem to be. You forget we actually HAVE a diesel car. And I like it.

And yes I've driven a HDi - a Xantia HDi 110 infact. It was noisy, slow and... well it was a 4 pot DERV. I've yet to drive a 4 pot diesel I actually thoroughly enjoyed. The closest was the 320d which was acceptable, offered pretty decent performance by all accounts but still sounded crap and you could still feel it idling through the steering wheel at traffic lights. And there was still NOTHING there below 2000rpm.

People - diesel engined road vehicles are not the second coming of Jesus. Go and drive a good petrol car and you'll suddenly get exactly what my point is.

I can't knock you for it becuase I understand the thought process - I did it once. I bought a diesel becuase, well, it was a diesel. IT MUST be super cheap. And give amazing MPG's. and Wow the torque!! OH THE TORQUE! etc etc.

Then I did some maths, drove some good cars, realised I was wrong.

Did you know the Xsara 110Hdi has the same amount of torque as a Honda Civic Type R.

When was the last time a Xsara HDI saw which way a Civic Type R went?

I used to think Dolph was an idiot when he said this but I've long since realised he was right. Torque at the flywheel is pointless and useful only for dieselheads to argue about in the pub. It's the torque that gets to the ROAD which matters and thats a product of the gearbox and the rpm of the engine.

Your average diesel hasn't got a lot of rpm..

There are lots of people for whom a diesel makes sense. Generally though, these people will either cover a quantity of miles in Europe or a large amount of miles in the UK. Everyone else is just kidding themselves that a diesel is the most financially prudent purchase or has already made the purchase and has now convinced themselves that yes, really, their puny 1.9 TDI Golf 105 has a really nice power delivery style they'd MUCH prefer to that 1.8T they almost bought. Honest. No, really. It's better. No wait..

Stop thinking that diesel always = cheap to run becuase it absolutely isnt the case. ESPECIALLY if most of your driving is around town as is the case for many in here.

Hence why I said it would get slated! :)

Its a good car for me, its low mileage, under warranty, will last me a few years before I sell it. Its quick, nice to drive, comfortable inside and I like how it looks! :)

Not really a fan of the older Mondeos, plus being 25, I'd rather drive a hatch back than some great big saloon car. I spend a lot of time in my car every day so a diesel is better for me than an ST. Plus insurance costs in the postcode I live in would be loads more with an ST!

i agree with most of that, just unfortunately my financial circumstances required a derv at the time (when i bought it, diesel was actually about 5-6p cheaper than petrol). plus i was covering approx 22k miles a year. it made sense, and i don't regret it.

and since then, i've seen and been quite impressed with the positive aspects of diesels. i suppose i just don't let aspects such as noise etc affect me? i hardly even notice the noise tbh? weird.

i still stand by the fact it won't drop 40mpg when driven hard (overtaking at every opportunity, generally very aggressive and looking a complete **** :p), same goes for most of the 1.9/2.0 PSA/VAG lumps... maybe i wish i was BSing, but i really am not :)

and then theres the fact something like the new ibiza cupra TDI 160 when remapped can keep up with many of the high performance hatchbacks out there, yet still obtain silly mpg and the other benefits... hell even in standard form they ain't bad!

i dunno, love or hate thing i suppose. i see the argument from both sides, and most probably my next car will be petrol again, but i just don't think dervs are as bad as you often make them out to be.

Same with my Focus TDCi. The diesel lasts forever in it and I'm usually fairly heavey footed!

My new one is 170 and its not far behind the 2l TFSI engine used in the petrols in terms of performance. So after a remap it should be good! :)

Seat are using TDI engines in thier BTCC cars anyway now and they are doing quite well there..

I really didnt want to get drawn into the Mondeo thing but... a Mondeo is a hatchback as well. A hatchback with a 2 litre diesel engine is a tad more middle aged than a hatchback with a 3 litre V6 petrol engine ;)

And thats before you get to the part where the Leon looks the same as the Altea looks the same as the Toledo looks like a people carrier.

I'll give you that one.. But a Mondeo really isn't for me, maybe in a few more years when I'm cruising the motorways. :)

Quite understandable - I'm not going to have a go becuase you didnt buy a Mondeo becuase it clearly isn't you - but personally I think a used Mk5 Golf GTI might have been more you ;)
