Just trying to establish a target, what do people define as a good salary these days? £30k, £40k etc?

i'm on what you'd call a "low" salary, but i'm very happy - it's all comparable.

I live comfortably, buy what i want, do what i want etc..

Like z0mbi3 said, I think its down to what you expect, want in life and also what your outgoings are, should depend on what salary you should target for.

You have to factor where you live, your outgoing costs, any dependents you have, loans, insurance policies, bills, council tax, living (i.e. food shopping etc...), petrol, and all sorts of other expenses.

Personally I'd say 40k is a minimum for a "good" salary, certainly for London anyway.

Yeah I'd say that's a good London salary. Probably a minimum good/medium salary for elsewhere would be 20-30k.

As I say it's all relative. If you live with your parents then 12k is a massive amount.

I would say that 30k-35k in Oxfordshire is pretty good going with living factored in. Oxford is pretty pricey with everything, even fuel is more expensive than London. Drinks aren't cheap in nightclubs and even my local pub is £5.75 for a single JD and coke.

I earn in the 24k-28k (bonus's vary and rising in Jan) and live from home... so that means that I have minimal expenditure and I buy everything outright so have no debt. So I would say I am on a good wage based on my circumstances. For london I would say £30-40k is enough to live life fruitfully.

Really depends, if you are a single person in London then £30k is decent enough to have more than enough disposable income to lead a very enjoyable life IMO, especially if you are pragmatic and house-share and suchlike.

I think if you can have ~£800 completely disposable income a month that is more than enough to live comfortably without making any real sacrifices.

My basic is less than 30k and I'd call that an average salary. A 'good' salary is more than 40k.

It not only depends on your circumstances but also on what the job entails.

Doing a standard 9-5 earning £30k is a better salary than earning £50k working 60 hours a week, in my opinion.

It depends on where you are, what sort of job you are doing, what industry you work for, how good you are at your job and how hard you work.

If you work in the City/Docklands, doing something IT related (analyst/developer) for an Investment Bank or a Hedge Fund, are good at your job and work hard; a good salary would be high 5 figures basic, with the bonus taking it well into 6 figures.

If you work in Basildon, doing undemanding physical work for the council are not very good at it and quite lazy, then £15k would be a good wage.

If you don't mean it in that respect, then a good wage is one where you are putting a maximum of 1/3 of your net pay into rent/mortgage, and can live comfortably within your means and are also able to pay reasonable amounts into savings/pensions (> £100 pcm).

Handy living from home ;)

Indeed it is, being 20 I feel no rush to move out and my daily commute is a 30 mile round trip. I pay good rent, purely because it goes to my family and I have everything I need at home. I barely spend any time at home because of the gym, nights out and seeing my girlfriend so yeah it's pretty handy as I wouldn't get my money's worth out of an appartment.

I aim to move out in the next 3 years, but as said above.. job is going well and I have no need to move out...yet.

London = 100k-100,000,000million. for fun.
London couple = £40k each to be able to afford a room long enough to sleep in.

Everywhere else = £20-30k.
