Hi,

I'm wanting to save up some money but need to get a job. I'm still at school so I'll just be able to work weekends. What sort of jobs should I be going for? Shops, high street retailers? Do these places even take 16 year olds on for a few hours at the weekend? What sort of wages would I expect?

Just questions for you guys I suppose before I take it any further. I don't suppose it matters much for a little weekend job but I got decent results in Standard Grades. Computing 1, English 1, Maths 1, Geography 1, Craft & Design 1, Physics 2, Chemistry 3, French 3.

So yeah, quickest way to make some money at the weekend. Cue Gigolo jokes.

Cheers

Restaurant, cafe or retail work I would suggest.

I was working for an Asian couple at 14 selling/building futons. I once spent 8 hours in a dark basement building futons with an electric power drill.

Just walk around your town centre and go into all the retail shops that take your interest, with a copy of your CV, and ask if they have any jobs available.

I was working at a motorbike shop for cash at 15, just cleaning up and stuff. Then at 16 i got a proper legal job at Tesco.

Look for supermarkets, i'd say. At least then you have a choice of what you want to do. If you dont want to talk to cutsomers, you can work out back or something.

Restaurant work. I've worked at a restaurant for 3 years now (since I was 13) and it's been great. Staff are great, as most of them I went school with and are good friends. During term time I have set hours, but in holidays (now) I just work when I can, which is good since I'm on £100 a week :).

Working in a supermarket on a Sunday usually pays quite well for your age, but it won't be fun. The best bet would be to find a good retailer you like, or cafe and hand your CV in.

If you work one day a week for a full shift of say 8 hours, at your age I'd expect around £32-35, which isn't bad pocket money.

I worked in a Fish & Chip Shop when I was 16 (Oh the days).

Took home quite a bit as I was working 5-6 days a week.

I think you may have to be 18 to cook but as a Counter Assistant, the wages can be ok.

Nope, can be 16 if you want. Depends on the establishment and how they view their insurance.

I used to work in a chippy too - good fun really but you did find you really had to scrub to lose the chip-fat smell at the end of the shift...

Also for a while at 15 I worked for a local kennel - just £15 or so for a day's work at the time which was hard work mucking out and walking the more boisterous pups (a few were a bit frightening), but great when you had some free time and could just go and sit in the runs with the cute ones :)

Try retail in the high street, it varies from shop to shop, the larger ones are more lenient from my experience, i.e. primark has 4/6/8 hour shifts one day at the weekend. If it's a big store there's also usually a bit of overtime available.

Try and get shifts on Sunday if you can. When I was 15 I started working in Tesco. Now I'm doing 2 days a week (one of them being Sunday) and I'm getting about £300 a month which isn't bad considering I only do 9.5 hours a week.

I do shop work at Lakeland 8 hours each weekend. It's perfectly acceptable and in the next few weeks my pay should go up to £5 an hour which is nice enough for me.

It's fairly low effort work, serve on the tills, help customers, put things on shelves. It's only a tad harder when you get put on delivery and have to unpack everything.

Add that to my blogging work and I pull in just over £300 a month which I don't think is too bad, so many extra summer hours at the mo, bringing in £80-120 a week currently :D
