Hi,

I am looking at getting a new home cinema system to replace my old all-in-one setup.

I am looking at getting either the Denon 1909 or Sony DG820. Now my budget for the whole setup would be around £1000 (although could possibly stretch to a bit more).

Now the denon is £450 and the sony can be had for £250 which would leave me either £600 or £750 for the speakers.

What amp would people recommend out of these two and also what speakers would be worth getting for around this price?

Thanks

Those speakers look decent, however I was even contemplating getting a 2.1 set up for now then getting the rest of the speakers in a couple of months.

So maybe getting 2 floorstanders and a sub? Would this be better?

personally I would be looking at other speakers, the Q acoustics are OK, but the sub is a bit lacking IMO.

You can still grab the Quad Lite 5.1 system for £500 if you hunt around. This was a bit of a bargain when it was released, and it cost £1000 then, so at £500 its a steal. It is a far better system than the Q acoustics.

If you are contemplating going 2.1 first, I would strongly advise on 3.1, the centre channel is so important in home cinema, it locks the dialogue to the screen.

I would also plump for the Denon over the Sony any day.

My 2 choice of systems would be

  • Denon 1909
    [*]Quad Lite 5.1

Total Cost around 1k

or

  • Denon 1909
    [*]Monitor Audio BR4 floorstanders
[*]Monitor Auido BR LCR centre speaker

Total cost around 1k

you can always upgrade and add the matching Monitor audio rear speakers and a nice sub when funds allow.

Depends on your budget, to get decent floorstanders you really need to start looking at £350 minimum, ideally £500. If your budget is something like £300 and you want floorstanders + sub, forget it.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies so far. Its so hard looking through the speakers and deciding which ones to demo/get!

Does anyone know if this speaker package is any good?

ACOUSTIC ENERGY AEGIS NEO 5.1 SPEAKER PACKAGE

Looks as if theyve been around a while but received a good review back then and they are available for £699 which would fit in the budget along with the denon amp...

If you've got £699 to spend then you could consider KEF IQ5SE-AV 5.1 HOME CINEMA SPEAKER PACKAGE. Apparently (posted on avforums) they're available for the same price and you could perhaps even demo both at the same place.

Are the 1010i much better then the 1010? Ie 50% more.

The 1000si version of the sub is supposed to be much better than the previous 1000s, Q Acoustics claim 40% more poweful and it also has a tighter bass sound according to reviews. The other speakers in the 1010i package all have improved tweeters, which benefits the centre speaker mostly.

You'll have to decide for yourself whether that's worth the extra cost! I've not compared them myself.
