4870 X2 reviewed

Any of those reviews actually use an overclocked CPU faster than 3Ghz? It seems very CPU limited, and only actually comes into it's own at 2560!!!! Clock the CPU up to 4Ghz and I want to see how it performs.

Seems like a very nice card but the price seems too high for the time being.
I wonder what driver version did the reviews sites work with though. Are they using the 8.7 or they installed the 8.8?

Why are people complaining about high power consumption? Its 2 gpus and a bridge chip on the one board. These arguments may make sense if it was only one gpu but thats not the case.

Does anyone want a 10% discount on one...... (i have a welcome back email voucher...)

I mean i respect that £380 reflects that they have them now and today! but iv got that feeling this isnt really worth it for quite a while... (at least to get some games to really max it out)

Still feel good for getting a 4870 over the weekend (hopefully wont fade in the next few days)

I'll have it, that would be great

Their GRID 1920x1200 results look wrong... I know this because I play GRID on my 4870 512MB with "ULTRA HIGH" settings not "ULTRA" settings and get more fps than their results table suggests a 4870 gets...

Whats your cpu running at though, seems most reviews have settled on a 3ghz or round about cpu.

You're contradicting yourself. How can it be "very CPU limited" yet "come into it's[sic] own" at higher resolutions?

Not really. I mean it can only show it's potential at 2560 because below 2560 it's bottlenecked by the CPU, most likely due to the crossfire overhead. Hence, "it's comes into it's own at 2560"...i.e. it starts to show it's real colours.

Having a higher clocked CPU (and retest all cards) will help clear this up and hopefully show what it is really capable of.

Ahhh in the hardware canucks review it's good to see that the backplate part of the stock cooler can be separated from the rest so you can use it to cool the plx chip and the ram chips on the front if you use GPU only water cooling :)

Had a look at about 10 reviews now and am swaying towards GTX280, based on cheapest cards with minimum 2yrs warranty then it's a tossup between 4870 £193, GTX280 £264 and 4870X2 £381

Can't see X2 being less than £330 even in a months time and think GTX280 is the sweetspot, more reviews I see the more I think it's the sweetspot when you factor in load power, temps and noise as well as the performance

Think X2 temps are high with a stock cooler and fan control that both seem poor, and the extra 100W+ over the other cards is a bit much, doesn't seem to have any overclocking headroom either

Performance over the GTX at 19x12 just isn't consistent enough in terms of % gains and too reliant on drivers for specific titles whereas GTX just does what it does all the time

If X2 was £300 and it had better cooling and much less power under load and drivers were more mature I'd prob would have added to basket but cant help being a bit underwhelmed by it as it stands today, what with the 4870's having gone up over a tenner then £264 for a GTX is looking ok, and even the reference cards overclock to same specs that the BFG OC models have, then theres PhysX for UT3 to muck about with, loads of forums too with 4870 owners with slowdowns, high temps and problematic driver installs too and fan control issues

Dunno what to do

Has anyone seen a review of the 4850X2? Faster than a single 4870, but should be only £20-30 more expensive... much more appealing than a 4870X2 for people like me that have a 22" monitor.

like to see what biased Custom PC has to say about this card, reviews are impressive, more mature drivers and more performance, AMD/ATi has done something good for once

Would not touch the current gtx280s as the gtx280+ is on its way sometime soon.

True but it'll prob only have slightly higher clocks and require less power, don't think it will be significantly faster but it'll prob be min £330 at launch and any existing stock of older GTX cards will prob stay same price
