4870x2 at ocuk

If they struggle to make enough of the chip then 2 are going in the X2 it will push the price up.

Let alone the small matter of double the (expensive) GDDR5 - price is higher than people wished, but its not too high - if you take the cheapest 4870 (the HIS) for £176 - then double that for the 2 cpu's = £352 - add a bit more for the PCI-e bridge chip - say £360 - and another £30-40 for the extra 1GB of memory and you have £400 - sure theres only one PCB - but it is bigger and more complex - and won't sell many (so development costs have to be recouped) - so knock £25 off (and I'm being generous at that) and you're in the ballpark.

With what is planned I am not too concerned.

The launches are big but the changes will have a bigger impact anyway. :)

Same could have been said of the 280 and 4850 launches, we want to get it right which is the main thing so trials are worth while. We do not want 10,000 orders sat in the warehouse at the end of the day when we launch a offer, we need to know what will happen and have the infrastructure solidly in place so we can cope without issue.

You shoot yourself in the foot if you cannot cope with the extra demand. :)

The prices are amusing. You’re all moaning like you didn’t see them coming though, since when has anything electrical sold within UK been sensibly priced within the first month of release...

Ironically the thing that's actually stopping me buying right now is the knowledge that in the past every single time despite the smoke and mirrors routine about "hurry stock running out", etc - there has always been a price cut shortly after the initial release.

When I bought my HD3870X2 from OCUK it went down by £10 within about 2 days, then a further £30 shortly after (we're talking less than 2 weeks after purchase). Therefore a damaging element of the way OCUK seems to handle new releases (i.e. gouge the hell out of people on Day 1, then prices settle down to normality shortly after) means that people like me who know the history just can't rationalise buying on Day 1 when there is every chance it will drop in price very soon after. It's just not worth having it a day or so in advance imo.

Frankly I don't believe the "hurry stocks going! buy buy!" Gibbo school of salesmanship nonsense. I don't doubt you're probably selling these cards but I've been around on here long enough to know all the parlour tricks that are wheeled out before, during and after a prominent release. That said it obviously works on the weak-willed otherwise you wouldn't all be driving around in Porsches and CSLs.

It's a real shame because I can't really fault the rest of OCUKs service based on my own experiences, but this gouging just doesn't sit well at all.

Oh poo. When i saw the price i though it was not too bad, then i clicked on it and realized that it did not include VAT.

Now i dont know if i should wait or just get the plain 4870.

get more staff then ;) multiply your staff by 100

Glad you posted that actually. :)

With the way the stock is selling we will probably end up with many pre-orders so the stock is not guaranteed to be available. There are some in our warehouse now so it is a safe bet if you really want one now.

We are reviewing our website presentation (Inc/Ex vat option may appear), courrier options, delivery offers and pricing. Rupert (RTB) is going through a lot of changes now we have the internal resources to handle the extra demand this would put on us.

We are doing things right if we change anything and unfortunately that takes time. Stick with us guys and we will have the best bits you can get everywhere else and our own historical strengths thrown in. :)

Great to see a quick response and taken in the manner it was intended. :) I look forward to seeing what the future may bring.

I don't like the initial high prices at launch any more than anyone else. Personally, I will now wait for the price to fall - £300 incl delivery (or lower of course!) was my own personal target.

As has been mentioned before though, this is simple economics in action. OcUK have built up quite a dominant position, and clearly manage their supply vs anticipated demand very well. The forum operates as an extremely effective customer temperature check in this regard.

I don't think that anyone should necessarily blame them for this - it is business. But we as customers are part of that business, and if they can start some schemes to reward frequent buyers (free posting etc) then the balance will be more even.

It is a bit childish if people expect to come here, post on the forums, become part of the community, all for nothing, and then expect limitless stock at cost price to be available within 2 minutes of a product launch.

Ultimately, the price is what the market is willing to pay. Early adopters are paying for the privilege, which is fine. Others are prefer to wait.

waits for 2009 q1 chaos : x58 ,nehalem , rv810 , big demmand ddr3 , new cpu coolers/water blocks. what u going to do when they all released in around the same time.

Be a good lad and send me an offer code to the addy in my trust. :D

I promise I'd use it within minutes on a 4870x2 purchase, you could even have it expire tomorrow. :)

Hey Yewen, I've still not received my email mate. :( :p

Really want a x2 so I can start to game full time on my 24" (switching between 22>24 at the mo). £350 is my absolute limit though.

Oh well, guess I'll just wait for the inevitable price dropage...

Supply and demand is not the only driving force behind market success. Repeat business is what gets you through the difficult times, repeat business can be used as a marketing tool through word of mouth recommendation (I myself have recommended OCUK to many friends over the years, heck 6 of my friends signed up to Nildram back in the day when they were widely voted as the number 1 ISP for serious gamers). Never under estimate the benefits of the existing customer. Tragically, as is so often the case companies tend to forget about the existing customers in the race to gobble up the new customers or to attract old custom back. Sky is a perfect example. Bleed the existing customers dry with extortionate packages, if you want to upgrade you still pay the full whack for the new equipment. However if you are a new customer you get it free or vastly discounted. Hardly an incentive to upgrade.

Incidentally, I left Nildram after 6 years as a loyal customer paying premium prices for a service that deteriorated to vastly below par of its competitors following a takeover by Pipex that pretty much destroyed its reputation. Take away a competitive edge and the competition will swallow you whole. Nildram's reward to its customer in its heyday was the fastest, most reliable service reasonable money could by, it was superb. As soon as that speed became mediocre and their prices remained above average, people walked.

Odd - I left Nildram too about 6 months ago.

You're right about the repeat business, however that is why I did highlight the pending loyalty rewards for frequent buyers, to keep things in balance.

If I was being cynical, I'd say put the amount spent by a user under their forum name, keep it updated in real time, and quite a few forum members would spend more needlessly, just to see the amount go up and their e-danglies get that little bit bigger.

Nah, I'd only get jealous of people who showed they had spent £10,000 in the last year.

I've happily picked one up, plenty of disposable income after a student placement :D

I can also still remember that on release day back in 04 my 6800GT cost me a good £450 or so, this feels pretty bargainous in comparison ;)

Me and Gibbo are revising every system specification to increase its performance for price.

If you are after something in particular then let me know. :)

Hi Yewen,

If you could revise the price of this

down by 10% or a bit more then I'm sure we could do a deal :D
