Im having a discussion with a colleague who seems to think it is illegal to drive barefooted, now i personally don't think it is, but we cant find anywhere if there are any laws about this?

any ideas?

the other one i wanted to know about is, whether it is illegal to drive with headphones on?

anybody have a clue?

I do it. Never been pulled over doing it. (barefoot)
Why would it be illegal?

Craig David Headphones would be a bad idea i think though! However, I often use a handsfree kit with in ear phones, so figure thats ok.

I have a friend who states she's be a worse driver if she wore shoes, and always drives in socks.

As long as you are in full control of the vehicle it doesn't matter, I've driven in platforms and spike heels before now (but personally can't drive barefoot).

I think if you were caught driving badly, and were barefoot, something would be said, but in essence it's not illegal.

I think driving with headphones on is illegal as you can't hear sirens etc. But I may be wrong. I can't hear sirens over my stereo anyway :p

I have a mate who wears headphones when driving, he asked me once if there was a problem with doing this and we couldnt really work out why it would be illegal. Sirens are the obvious problem but as Vix pointed out a loud stereo is just as bad.

I was always under the impression that it was illegal, i would think that it would not be safe due to the majority of peoples feet being very sensitive. If you were driving bare foot and there was stone in the grip of the brake pedel and worked it's way loose, you go to stand on the break and the stone sticks in your foot you then pull off the brake and cause an accident.

I don't know for sure if it is illegal but IMO it is irresponsible.

The thing is if there's glass or sharp stones or other potentially hazardous things in the foot well and you had to do an emergency manoeuvre and you hurt your foot or injured yourself causing you to lose control of the vehicle it could be potentially dodgy. However when in Cyprus I always drive bare foot. I guess there's a chance of losing control...

No - As long as you have proper control of the Vehicle.

This is correct.

As for the headphones, also not illegal as long as it doesn't impair your ability to be aware of the road conditions.

However, if for any reason it does impair your ability to drive, you are liable for prosecution for carless/dangerous driving, or driving without due care and attention.

It's not illegal.
I saw someone driving barefoot on one of those Traffic Cops shows once and it wasn't a problem.

People could get into a lot more difficulty wearing shoes anyways.... flip-flops and high-heels.

neither are illegal, with headphones if you failed to move out of the way for a police car or something they might take you wearing headphones as evidence you were driving without due care and attention, and same if you were pulled for driving unevenly and they noticed you werent wearing shoes, i personally find it much easier to drive in bare feet than in my big work boots, however i'll usually keep a pair of trainers to put on for driving if i'm wearing them

Headhones just seem like a bad idea.
No matter how loud I've had music I've never once failed to actually hear a siren - it's all down to the combination of notes they use that you can pick them out over really quite loud music.
However most headphones are designed to block-out all sounds but the music being played - a high chance that you could miss a siren.

I'd personally never wear headphones while driving.
