I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering about it. To upgrade or not.
Sell my faithful 8800GTX with HR-03 and put some more money in the money pit that is my computer and upgrade or not and wait?

I have been planning on getting a 32" TV of some sort and I can either get a nice one for around £500 (probably a little less) or go for a nice cheapy and upgrade my card. I'm stuck....

Ideas?

OP, I'm was in a similar situation to you recently. I have just moved from 8800GTX to this weeks offer - the overclocked Powercolor 4870. Hope it works out...

Having waited this long you might as well see what the nvidia gtx 280+ turns out like in maybe a months time.

completely agree. Unless there's something that's becoming unplayable I'd wait and see what the 55nm 280 turns out like. I'm another looking to upgrade from 8800GTX at some stage but have convinced myself I don't need to do it yet just for the sake of it.

my 1.5 year old 8800GTX does my 22inch screen perfectly. just wait for gtx280+ and see its price and how it compares price/performance with 4870x2, then decide whether to upgrade.

besides, 8800GTX already droped under £100 on the bay. so waiting a bit longer won't hurt, im sure you can fetch £80 in mid-september.

end of the day an 8800gtx still plays everything very well - why upgrade until it starts stressing over max setting on all games?

I have the same card 8800GTX, would it be worthwhile just adding another one to SLi my PC, that would give it some extra boost and only spending a £100

Looks like the 8800GTX exodus is maybe beginning.....................

I find myself being stupid at the moment, I know the GTX is fine for me in all the titles I'm either re-playing eg Farcry, HL and COD2 (since getting DGM 24" LCD) or my backlog titles such as FEAR persius mandate, HL2 Eps 1 & 2, as well as upcoming Brothers In Arms Hells Highway

Am holding off Crysis and can play everything at 19x12 at 4AA/8AF and even 16AF with in game settings maxed out and games look and play fantastic

So why am I even looking to replace I ask myself lol

New shiny toy to play with I guess ;)

If it weren't for the GTX280+ and I was buying today I think I'd get a GTX280 but I'm resisting temptation to add to basket until GTX280+ is tested and perhaps GTX280 and X2 are lower in price, also watching how the stability of the X2 fairs over next month and if driver releases iron out some of the niggling issues

Gainward £252 inc vat & delivery is very tempting mindst :D

I do want to upgrade though before COD:WAW, Farcry2 and Crysis Warhead and also getting round to Crysis

I have 8800 gtx and have been very tempted to upgrade but keep telling myself there is nothing I can't play right now on my 24" so why upgrade.

4870 is so tempting though!

Next Crysis is out next month so will see how that runs.

I completely agree too, the 55nm is sounding like it's gonna be a massive boost to the 280, so i would wait :)

It appears the shader performance of the + is going to be the biggest hike, the stock core clock is similar to current overclocks at 650 but the shader clock is 200 more than the current best shader overclock, unsure on memory but would be surprised it it were less than 2600

shader performance could be 30% more than a reference 280 based on comparing 602/1296 v 650/1620 which some chinese site claims, memory bandwidth could also be about 160 up from 141 (up 13%)

Maybe more room for overclocks too ? imagine 725/1700/2700 would be interesting but Im just plucking those figures out the air, maybe realistic though

I too have a 8800GTX. I am looking to avoid a PSU upgrade this time round (I have a Seasonic S12 600w). So I was leaning towards the 280 GTX, I think I will now wait for the 280+ as it may require a little less juice.

Been wondering if it's worth buying another gtx 2nd hand now they are going for £100. Only prob is my hr03 would have to come off to fit it in my pc :(

I've had my 8800GTX since launch, and I usually would have upgraded long before now, but it still plays everything beautifully on my 24".

I think a lot of us GTX owners just feel that it's time to upgrade, rather than feeling we need to upgrade. All of my favourite games (HL, FarCry, CoD, Oblivion) run perfectly at max settings. I've just finished Far Cry (again), and now I'm itching for more of the same. I just hope FarCry2 is more like FarCry than Crysis was.

I've decided that the most sensible thing to do is wait until a game actually makes my GTX struggle, and then get the best card available at that time.

That would require common sense though;) Itchy trigger finger for a new toy! I cannot disagree with you, patience is a virtue apparently:rolleyes::D
