Hi, I need to upgrade my 5 year old AMD XP setup and am looking at getting this:

E2180 clocked to 3Ghz+
Asus P5Q-E mobo
2x2gb ram
ATI HD 4850
Corsair TX 650 PSU

I'm a bit lost as to what ram I should get for overclocking. Am I best with 6400 or 8500? Do the CAS settings make a big difference?

I like the look of the OCZ stuff and the prices seem good:

Is there other ram I should get?

I'm going for 2x2gb so I can stick in another 4gb of ram if I go for Vista 64. I'd like to get an HD video camera before I upgrade PC again so I'd like the option of 8gb ram for HD video editing.

Cheers!

well in order for an e2180 to get to 3ghz all you will need is 300mhz because the 2180 has a 10x multiplier you could even get some pc5400 ram but personally I'd get the cheapest 4gb pc 6400 kit you can, if you ran pc6400 at stock 1:1 ratio on the ram your 2180 would be 4ghz 10x 400mhz so you could easily run 10x 300mhz and tighten the ram timings.

Thanks C64. I guess I should have mentioned that I may upgrade to a quadcore in a year or so. Thus it'd be handy if I had ram that could overclock the likes of a Q9550.

Cob - I can't get the link above to work - I'd be interested to know your suggestion as I'm upgrading next week, cheers in advance.

This looks like a bargain to me:
OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-9200C5 1150MHz Reaper HPC Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR11502GK)

It's only 1gb sticks so I would have to replace it if I went for 8gb eventually. Also, 4x1gb of that would cost me about twice as much as 2x2gb of 6400 or 8500. I can't see how it's a bargain.

You only need 333mhz ram to get your E2180 to get 3.33ghz easily, having said that i would go for the 2x2gb set or even the 2 x 4gb stuff from OCZ, its 800mhz stuff but if you go for a high multi CPU (e8600) at a later date it will still be ok.

Ok thanks guys, it's now penetrated my skull that it's not going to affect me overclocking the cpu. I've looked at some tests of 6400 v 8500 and it doesn't seem to make a huge difference so....

Cob - I'm going to take your recommendation. If I need faster ram in the future, then I'll just replace it and use the GeIL in a 2nd PC.

Right, that's me decided! Cheers guys!

Aye, that's true. Maybe by then DDR3 will really make a difference. I'm upgrading from 1gb of DDR so I reckon my next upgrade should be to 16gb of DDR3. :D
