I'm going to cut straight to the point:
Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB) - Retail

This chip is not a Core2Duo. It's a Pentium Dual Core. I KNOW its just a naming difference. It's a conroe core running at 800FSB. I FULLY understand what it is. I did however buy it because i thought it was the cheapest Core2Duo - I have been out of the hardware loop for ages, needed a cheap cpu, and knew the Core2Duo range had the best reputation, so I bought this purely on the information presented to me on the OcUK site.

I told OcUK support I feel mislead, but did not want to send the cpu back as this would just inconvenience me further - I got the following response:

you have recieved the right CPU and it has been labeled correctly. There is not a lot we can because you did not research the product the properly before you brought it. If you are that unhappy with the item you can return for upto 7 working days under DSR.
I AM happy with cpu - I just feel a little duped, and I didn't like the "There is not a lot we can do because you did not research the product" quip at all. So I emailed Intel to clarify if I was in the right..........

Dear Mr Xxxxxxxx,

Thank you for contacting Intel® Customer Support.

I can confirm that the model you bought, E2180, is part of the Pentium Dual Core processor family, and can not be advertised as a Core 2 Duo. Pentium Dual core and Core 2 Duo processors belong to two different families, so I advise you contact you reseller to sort out any misunderstanding.

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Xxxx X.
Intel® Customer Support (EMEA)
Point of all this - I dont want anything (compensation or a real Core2 would be nice tho) - but I just dont want to be made an idiot of - I really want to know what you all think: Is it fair to advertise the E2180 as a Core2Duo, when it has only every officialy been branded as a Pentium Dual Core

Would be better to have put this in a note to the shop.

If you look at the descriptions and images on the CPU core 2 section the pentium dual core series E21xx all have a copy and pasted description from the E6xxx series. Definatly something that needs updating.

OcUK included the words "Core 2 Duo" on product's page - and a picture of the Core2Duo retail box. Intel named it a Pentium Dual Core - I can confirm it comes in a Pentium Dual Core Box.

Intel named it not ocuk.

This isn't as straight forward as that... intel market it as:

Intel Pentium Dual-Core, E2180, Socket 775, Allendale Core, 2x2.0 GHz, 1MB Cache, Retail

IIRC the older allendales were marketed* by intel as being core 2 tho I could be wrong its been awhile... but the correct denomination for the E21xx is Pentium not core 2 duo.

Intel are as much to blame for this mixup from what I've seen as is whoever did the descriptions at OCuk and didn't pay enough attention to detail.

* Actually this was something of a screwup as the E6300, etc. were said to be allendale when infact they were conroe - again not sure at what level this mixup occured.

Intel named it 'Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Desktop Processor E2180', this is from their Own Website, you should have done some research, never trust the sellers web site as mistakes can be made!

OCUK are wrong in this instance and should be changing the listing as we speak.
Technically you have sufficient grounds to return the products as you have not received what is advertised. As does anyone else who has ever purchased a E2180 from OCUK.

I did say technically however, In reality you should research your products before purchasing them, however it is still wrong for OCUK to cause confusion to its customers.

OCUK will still close this thread and probably not be happy that you did not go through the Webnote method as stated in the Rules/FAQ's.

They do not like anything Negative said even if its true.

Negative or not, whoever is posting product descriptions for the products is just cutting & pasting from other products.

I noticed the same with graphics cards, it was only when I mentioned in a thread where an OcUK member of staff saw it was rectified, was in relation to Guarantee length, was stated as 1 year instead of 2 etc.

Whether it's negative or not it's in OcUK's best interests to ammend the description as it's basically "false advertising" no matter how you look at it.

I did use the webnote system, and part of the reply I got is quoted in the OP.

@Nelly: I fully agree: If they had an accurate description I would have perhaps bought a more expensive genuine Core2Duo.

these things happen. A simple update on their website. And a quick "my bad" from OcUK and the offer of return + replacement under DSR.

problem solved. :)

Ouch that one has been on the website for a while.

Not been notified of this by our technical department so have not been able to correct and have only just noticed this thread on a off chance.

I will apologise right out for the mistake and it will be corrected within the hour, cokebottles would like to grab you on MSN so I can get your order number and send out some goodies for you if you due to this. :)

As was offered by the support person you are more than welcome to return this for a complete refund but if you are happy with the chip then obviously keep it!

Constructive notes are fine on the forums but this really is lucky that I spotted it or it would never have gotten a reply.

It is always best and in the forum rules to contact us by webnote or telephone for the guaranteed resolution.

Update: Descriptions and product name updated, it is still the Core 2 technology just the naming scheme that was incorrect so that has been left due to the majority of our customers living off the tech specs. :)

Catch me on MSN cokebottles for a quick chat and I will put a goodie bag together for you. Would be handy to know who replied to your webnote as well. (off the boards please)

I was under the impression that Intel changed it from Core2Duo its original architecture to Pentium after spending millions on advertising maybe aimed at those who don't know any better

Quite the opposite! We are particularly keen on promoting good customer service so instead of just deleting the thread as you can see we are actually helping out cokebottles and Yewen is talking to him as we speak.

Btw you have Intel Celeron E1200 listed in both celeron and core2 lists, wouldnt it be better just to have it in celeron section even tho your specs say it uses core2 tech but its name is celeron. Bit of a toughy where to put it i can see.
