I am looking for an electric guitar and practice amp for a maximum of £1,500. I play metal and rock but would appreciate versatility. Will mostly play at home initially. Previously owned Fender strats, Gibson SG, Yamaha SG2000, PRS Custom 22 so looking for something a bit different for a change.

I like to play stuff like Megadeth, AC/DC, Sabbath (Dio Era), Metallica, Judas Priest and so on.

I was thinking along the lines of ESP Horizon,M-II, Les Paul Standard, maybe an Ibanez Prestige or J-Custom.

As far as practice amps go I have previously used a Pod XT and Vox Tonelab as well as various valve amps. I would prefer to use a modeller to start with due to noise restrictions. Pod x3 any good? or would I be better served with another brand?

The spider valve, is this the bogner designed one? Do you have a variax 700, if so what do you think of it?

Yes.

I have a Variax 300 which has been setup brilliantly.
It plays like a dream and the sounds that come out of it are superb.
I do have a big guitar collection but I play the Variax all the time and the 700 is way better.

About a month ago I took my Dads Variax 600 to the gig I was playing at because my guitarist was going to set it up.
He plugged it, started to play while I went through some of the guitar presets and we ended up going on late because of the interest in the guitar from the audience.
I was with a bloke last night who always goes out with a Les Paul, Strat and Telecaster but he's now swopped to the Variax so he doesn't have to mess around on stage.

i'd say go for a beautiful Schecter guitar. they do some fantastic looking guitars, some with EMGs (for rock and metal) and some with seymour duncans (for versatility).

for amps, it's a tough one. if it's just a practise amp, get a line6 spider/vetta/flextone. or if you want some more choice, get a pod xt/x3 and a nice tube amp (peavey classic?)/poweramp. they both have the ability to be used live, but the former will sound better at low volumes if you cant crank the tubes.

Most Schecters I've seen are not beautiful at all!

Ive got an ESP LTD M400 and I love it, it suits my style of play (obviously) but its light the neck is fast and it sounds awesome.

I would have got this had my budget been above £450.

or the slighty more expensive with fixed bridge and SD pickups.

can get them quite cheaply imported from american dealers, and they play like dreams even with the factory setup :o

Line 6 Variax 700 and Line 6 Spider Valve.

I've never played a Variax, but I've got a Line 6 Spider III 75. If the Spider Valve is as good or better, than I can heartily recommend!

The guitar I use the most is a PRS Custom SE (in cherry sunburst, of course :D), nice guitar for reference.
