As title. I put together the following pc yesterday:

E6300, gigabyte P31-DS3L, HD3870 512mb, 2gb kingston pc6400 value ram, enermax 485w psu, usual other stuff.

Put it together, all worked fine, overclocked to 2.8ghz (400 x 7) ram at 1:1, all nice and stable, ran orthos no probs. Eventually had the cpu up to 3.15ghz with a mild overclock on the memory, temps at all times were no higher than 45c idle/57c load. I was experimenting with the auto fan control (to lower cpu fan speed if temps are low via the mobo), rebooted the pc and lost the ovwerclock completely.
Now, the system will only only overclock to 2.33ghz, (333 x 7), any higher and the pc resets itself to stock speeds. I've tried most of the usual things, update bios, reset cmos, checking the options settings, gradually increasing overclock, vcore is at 1.4v (where it was whilst running at 2.8ghz). Its currently at 2.33ghz orthos stable for a few hours now. I get the impression I've missed summat here.

Anyone have any ideas?

The highest I can get the fsb to is 340 x 7 with a very mild overclock in the memory. vcore is a 1.4v so thats not an issue (I think). It appears to be related to the 266/333/400 options in the bios but I'm damned if I can find a way past 340mhz fsb.

my 6300 was very stroppy when i first got it, needed 1.4 just to get to 3ghz, now it can do that on default voltage.

would suggest doing what i did, leave it for a while on the best stable over clock you can get, then give it another go.

have you tried with just one stick of memory ?

memory/northbridge voltages ok ?

try dropping the multi to 6 and see if it lets u get any higher.

If it's been running at 3.15GHz before then it may just be a case of getting all the bios settings the same again.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

If it won't go past a certain fsb then the mem/nb may need more volts or the mem divider lowering.

Clearing the cmos is me next step and it was running fine at 400 x 7 (2.8ghz), orthos stable for a cou[la hours and played games fine, in both cases the temp never went above 57c load. The memory already had +.3v set (2.1v) and all voltages were at stock except vcore which was at 1.4v (which I intended to start lowering later on to find the lowest Vcore possible for 2.8ghz)
I reckon its summat to do with this "strapping" that I've heard about, 'cos the cpu runs fine at 333 fsb, but 10mhz above that and it a no go. Its too precise a fail point to be hardware related I feel. I'll have a play around and see how I get on.
thanks for the info, its appreciated:).

When I was at 2.8ghz, the MCH and FSB voltages at stock and raising these bit by bit made no difference at all. I've even tried 1.45Vcore, still no go. I've tried lowering the multi and testing each individual ramstick and I keep getting the same results, no go above 333 fsb. nad I've updated the bios too.

Deffo the mobo, just stuck an e6600 in it to try out and did exact same thing, couldn't get past 333mhz, dunno what the answer is.

Sorted! It had a trawl through the related p31-ds3l treads, and found that a few ppl had the same prob as me, couldn't get past 333fsb no matter what. Turns out the "pci-e frequency" had to set to "auto", not 100mhz" as I was doing. Currently running orthos at 400 x 8 (3.2ghz), happy bunny now:)
