Do you need the packaging to return a product?

I bought a pair of Shure E2C's from a website and now (within the warranty period) due to an inherent defect the cables have cracked exposing the wire and causing them to malfunction (quite possibly a danger of electric shock tbh), on the manfacturers website it says to send the product back to them in the original packaging, but atm I can't find the original packaging (which had to be destroyed to even open in) is it legally necessary to have to return the item in it's original packaging?

I'm very dissapointed with Shure, selling what are marketed as high quality earphones, with cables that split within a few months during everyday use. :(

if they've broken then you don't need the packaging (but do need proof of purchase. obviously). just to point out, there's NO danger of electric shock from headphone/earphone connections. there isn't anywhere near the voltage OR current required :)

If you want to return an item because it's faulty you do not need the original packaging. If you're returning something because you don't like it and the shop takes it back it generally needs to be in the original packaging so the shop can sell it again.

Is there enough charge to feel it if the wires are broken? I used to have a pair with a tear in the plastic and it either used to sting me or I imagined it all :( I hope i didnt imagine it :)

Don't worry - Shure offer the best customer service I've ever seen. Phone them up and I'm sure they'll say bubble-wrap is OK (with a copy of the receipt shoved in it). They'll send you out a new pair basically as soon as they receive yours.

As a side note the E2Cs aren't advertised as high-quality - they're absolutely bottom of the range.

In comparison to other headphones (sony etc), they most certainly do advertise them as being high quality.
But in comparison to other's (the rest of the shure range, Sennheiser, UE, Grados, Etymotic etc) they most certainly don't. I wouldn't class them as middle-range.

Exactly, for a £40 pair of earphones wire to split is disgraceful considering even my psp earphones didn't split which must have cost about £1.

Every manufacturer has the odd product that goes wrong regardless of quality control. As long as they sort it out fuss free all is good with the world.

This is a wide spread problem like microsofts xbox 360 was, they've been selling them knowing their design is defective, as you can see from reviews.

i bought the Se310's last year from the usa, and the cable casing had split.
i phoned them up and they said just send it in a padded envelope with proof of purchase and they will send a new pair to me.

i did that except i forgot proof of purchase and they still sent a brand new pair out in about 3 4 days!

i wrote them a letter of thanks i was that impressed with their customer service. if only all companies were like this
