Reading the other thread I thought it would be good to have a thread recommending films that others may have missed. Obviously we all know about Batman, Iron Man and films like that but a lot of really good films slips through the cracks.

The Lives of Others: Foreign film about a top East German Stasi agent who becomes absorbed in the lives of a couple he is monitoring. A great film if you can live with subtitles.

imdb 8.5

Running scared:

After a drug-op gone bad, Joey Gazelle is put in charge of disposing the gun that shot a dirty cop. But things goes wrong for Joey after the neighbor kid stole the gun and used it to shoot his abusive father. Now Joey has to find the kid and the gun before the police and the mob find them first.

I watched this film by chance and found it really enjoyable.

imdb 7.6

The Listening: Estranged by the degree of corporate influence within the largest U.S. listening station in the world, an aging NSA officer defects and mounts a clandestine counter-listening station high in the Italian alps.

Pretty good film about an NSA agent who helps a woman the NSA are mistakenly targeting.

imdb 6.2

Les Patriotes: Another foreign film. At 18, Ariel Brenner leaves Paris and his family to live in Israel. He secretly joins the Mossad, the Isreali secret service. After years of training, his first mission is in Paris to steal secrets from Remy Prieur, a French atomic scientist... We will assist to the methods, the manipulations, the abuses, the machiavellism, the doubts of secret agents

It's a decent spy film, it's not all shooting and bombs but rather the slow side of how they obtain what they want with sex, blackmail and money.

imdb 7.5

I thought Alpha Dog was bloody brilliant film, excellent acting and a great story line. I don't want to say anything incase it ruins the plot but if you enjoy being wowed it's a great film, give it chance to get to know the character, people often switch off soon on in because of the introduction of the characters.

Charlie Wilson’s War was another fantastic film about the US involvement in the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, how it was imperative that the US was involved via proxy. Tom Hank’s plays the part well as he often does in his role, again, I don’t want to give away too much, if your interested by films about politics of war give it a watch.

Can also highly suggest ‘In Bruge’.

The Wickerman (origional version with E war woo war)

*Edward Woodward for anyone thats never heard the joke

I watched the orphanage the other day, spanish film with english subtitles,

It is by the guy who directed pan's labyrinth and hellboy,

The story is brilliant and immersive but very sad and a little depressing

I highly recommend it

Southern Comfort - Great movie by Walter Hill about a group of National Guardsmen being hunted down by Cajun psychopaths, The movie has Vietnam war undertones and has a great ending not dissimilar to Apocalypse Now.It also has a great music score by Rye Cooder.

The Beast of War - Set in Afghanistan this film is about a lost russian tank being hunted down by Mujahadeen rebels. Shows the other side of the war and what the Russians did to them and what we and the Americans are doing now.

Monster - Based on the true story of Aileen Wuornos, the prostitute who became a serial killer. Absolutely stunning performance from Charlize Theron. Warning: may make you cry. :p

Boy A

It's about a boy who goes to jail for something bad that happened when he was 10 years old, he gets realeased at around 22 years old under a new name and tries to fit into society

It picked up quite a few awards, including 4 Bafta's this year

British made film, saw it on either CH4 or Film4 a few weeks ago, awesome film, first time I've cried at a film in years
