Unable to install catalyst drivers for 4870X2

Hi All,

I've just got my new PC, have applied a new install of Vista 64 + SP1, then I'm trying to install the catalyst 8.7 drivers (have also tried 8.8 beta)

While the drivers seem to install, they don't then get recognised and I can't get the PC to re-boot after the install, just goes past BIOS and then freezes during windows load.

Can anyone provide any guidance on how to install these drivers.

The system is a pre built one from overclockers.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...3350 2.66GHz @ 3.30GHz+ Quad Core DDR2 System

I've tried an number of times now without any luck, I'm just restoring from a true image copy of the C drive, and will be ready to try again soon so any help and advice is appreciated.

Regards

Taff

did you just run them straight from the install option on the disk?

Thats what I'm trying to do, just giving it another go now, so will see what happens.

Not having a great day with this new PC so far, has taken 6 hours already and haven't go it up and running.

I tried ever way you can imagine and then some. Driver refused to load, even if you checked the device manager its listed as installed, just wont function. I had a hell of a job getting it working with Vista 64. Works well enough now though, these betas aren't the most stable I've ever used, but they work. Just ran 3dmark06 at stock for a laugh, 22.1K.

Well, have just tried the drivers from the disk again and black screen of death on boot up.

get the vista loading progress bar, then it goes black and no further.

Ok, will have to restore again from the back up and have another go, this time with the 8.8 betas again.

Did you run them, by right clicking and doing run as administrator, or just by double left clicking?

Cheers

8.7's do not support the X2's, those drivers came out about a month before the card was released, only drivers that do support them are the leaked 8.8 beta's and the ones on the CD's.

OK, have got a bit further now

Loaded the 8.8 betas from a download site. After installing them the PC wouldn't boot.

Restarted and booted to last known good configuration.

Now can get into windows and can see catalyst control panel and other ATI products, but on running them I'm given the message that there are no ATI drivers installed.

'No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware'

Is it possible to just extract the display drivers and load them the old fashioned way by just doiing an update driver rather than having to install the whole of the ATI package?

Cheers

Hi Slick,

Tried that as I'm starting from a fresh install of Vista so there are no drivers in place to begin with

It must be a driver conflict issue though, as using computer /device manager/ display adapters I can get to the graphics card and it shows it has a VGA driver installed for it.

I can then do an Update Driver from there and point the installer at the drivers in the 8.8 beta package.

It installs the driver and even reports on the screen that it has found a 4870X2 and reports two of them (presume this is the two chips on the one card).

It then asks for a reboot. But on reboot it will not load back into windows.

Getting a little bit fed up with this now.

Also another question, the Rampage board has two PCI *16 slots, I'm using the one closest to the CPU, top of the board as there's more clearance there. Does anyone now if there's any difference between the two slots?

I'm tempted to install Vista 32 to see if that makes a difference.

Cheers for all the help so far

are you seeing the green loading bar then nothing after?

can you check it with a vga cable instead of a dvi cable?

Hi Spooky,

get the progress bar going across the screen then it goes black, just before you'd normally get the windows icon in the middle of the screen.

Can't use anything but a DVI cable on this car as there's no VGA cable outputs.

Cheers

and you dont have one of those dvi-vga jobbies? i have to use vga as i have the same problem if i use dvi. my x800xt, x1950pro, hd3870 and now my 4850 wont work over dvi with my monitor, 1 day it worked and then the next it never and that was when i had my x1950pro in, tested the others with the same results.

something to do with the monitors EDID or something from what i read. the monitor will work fine with nvidia cards but not ati's anymore

Hi, Supertaff I just wanted to know if you got this working, and if you did how you did it? I'm having the same problem as you did when you got to the stage of 'No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware'. Thanks.
