Hi All,

I've not got any experience with cable broadband but have been at the in laws and there's seems more than a little bit flakey.

They have the same cable modem that they've had for years, issued by Telewest a webstar gpx100? This is then plugged into a netgear wgr 614 v6 wireless router.

It seems to disconnect or generally go to sleep a lot.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance,

Call tech support and ask for a new one?

Yup, iirc that's one of the very old modems, and might not work well with the current speeds/settings virgin use (from memory they started using a slightly different modulation method about a year back that some older modems dislike).

Are they generally happy to send a new one for free? Ours goes back to 2003 when it was issued by NTL (something 120) and hangs sometimes, which requires a restart.

Hassle them until they do. Best way is to hpone them. Say all the lights have gone out and it appears to have died. Then break it :)

I tried to get them to issue me a new one. 2003 is when i got mine. Virgin tend NOT to want to send one and they try to pawn it off to charge u for it :(

You never own the cable modem, it's leased to you for the duration of your contract and thus should be replaced if anything goes wrong with it, same as the STB if you have Virgin TV.

surprising that, considering there was a webpage on their site for requesting a new modem. ive had two new modems from them and i was never asked for payment.

I phoned Virgin straight away as when they upped me to 20MB, my old silver NTL 120 modem **** its pants on me and couldn't handle the speed. So they kindly whisked a new one to me, the very next morning infact, which appears to be the 250 model, with Virgin branding.

Thanks all,

Virgin did replace the modem they say it definately wasn't butch enough for the high speed broadband.
