Well, along with a few friends I'm planning a trip to the Nürburgring sometime over the next few months.

Only problem is, I have no idea where to start planning. Gonna need to set off from N.Ireland, and drive down through England to Calais... from there I'm stuck!

Anyone done the trip before and can provide any help/hints?

It can be cheaper to go to Dover-Dunkirk. Once you're over there, a tom tom with appropriate maps will get you there no problem.

If you're camping, Camping am Nurburgring is a great site - proper massive. Hotel Nordschliefe is also a good place to stay, the rooms at the from have views over the track.

A trip to Pistonklause in Nurburg is mandatory, steak being the meal of choice.

Have fun, DON'Y feel like you have to be flat out straight away, and be careful!! Oh, the go-karts are fun as well!

You need to plan for...

Ferry costs, as above, dover - dunkerque is a good bet, cheaper too.
Fuel Costs
Insurance for driving in europe (not covered anyway on the ring)
Breakdown cover, i would highly recommend www.adac.de (if you come off the track, you will be charged 200 euro just to be towed off to the car park) but if you show an ADAC card, its free and they ship you to a repairers.
You will want to have aside - the 6 euro for a nurburgring sticker too!

Time wise, your looking from dunkerque, 5 hours ish including a stop or two. You basically want to head towards brugges when you gett off the ferry, go around brussells on the autobahn, then hit germany and their autobahns. This way you avoid any toll roads in france.

Check on nurburgrings website for the specific days events, you want "touristfaharten" (spelling!) and they are only usually weekends, or weekdays 5.15pm till 7:30pm ish.

21 euros for a lap on the ring, when you arrive, you want to head for nordschliefe not for the main grandstands, as you don;t sign on there.

The following website also has a lot of useful info: http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/

Hope this helps!

Cheers for the help so far, very informative!

One question - If I don't want to take my car round the ring, is there cars you can hire to take round?

Also, what is the ring taxi like, good fun?

There are specific cars, its a public road not a track officially, so you are supposed to bring your transport with you.

The ring taxi, well have a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx5_PS5CMrg

Followed by a porsche ! Expensive but well worht it IMO. You have to book months in advance though.

We got back last week from a trip which was superb, we are already planning a trip for next year.

We got the ferry over from Rosyth to Zeebrudge, then followed the sat nav. We went over in 4 cars which after only 30mins got split up as the back two missed a sliproad. It which worked out better this way anyway as keeping four cars together in busy traffic was a bit of nightmare when you were the front car. The drive itself didn't take long on our trip through Germany there was a lot of roadworks and narrow lanes but unlike the UK the traffic still moved at a good rate.

We stayed in the Ringhaus hotel (http://www.ringhaus.com/hotel_en/public/)which is two minutes from the enterance of the ring and it only cost us £140 ish for 5 nights so no point in paying for camping as folk we got talking too payed 48euors for 4 nights.

As alread said take a trip to Pistonklause in Nurburg (5minute walk from the Ringhaus) this place was packed but we had booked two nights well in advance of going, the fillet steak on a stone gets my recommendation ! Food and drink was very cheap we were having maybe 6 or 7 rounds of drinks and a 3 course meal for about 40 euros a night.

The ring itself is a petrolheads dream, plenting of expensive metal and when we were there at least a lot of UK cars. Its easy to get laps in other cars like GT3s, M3s/5s etc and the like, the universal point at the passanger seat works a treat. At the weekend we hit the track at opening time and it was dead you could do a lap without seeing another bike/car. Just make sure that when you are going the track is open to the public as it isn't always.

I personally took it pretty easy round the track and treated it like a fast A road I didn't know. Some people however were pushing very hard and generally these were the ones that hit the barrier a UK Mini went past me sideways with a 130mph on my speedo two corners later he had clipped the barrier. A S2000 spun and cracked hit back bumper however he had to pay £800 for a little dent in the barrier. There is constant reminders with totally wrecked Evos/BMWs/Porches getting taken off the track but all of us drove at 90% and didn't have a problem.

You can easily rent a ring track car from the likes of Mk5 GTis, R32s, M3s , Porche GT3S, Megane F1 R26 all of them had cages but otherwise looked like standard cars. The Megane/MK5 GTI was 575 euros for the day.

there are hire cars specifically for the ring but they arent cheap and the insurance excess is very high or not at all. which i can vouch for! there are also all the costs for repair of the track and safety car if you do bin it.

we normally stay in the pistenklaus or next to it as the food is good and its a good place to drink and chat.

I think I saw the Mk3 had you rented it from the Ringhaus ? Certainly didn't look like they had spent all the money you gave them on fixing it !

adding up my trip 23/09 to 25/09:
  • Before I go Tyres £300 (they need replacing after my Snetterton Track day)
  • Dover to Dunkirk £40
  • Room @ Ringhaus, €45 per night, €135 or £106 roughly (i have no mates to go with... boring bar stewards.)
  • 4 Laps €70 £55.16 or 8 laps €135 £106
  • Fuel... 300miles per 45litres roughly so 4 tanks? (1 there, 1 back, 1 track, and 1 for sight seeing) From what i hear fuel isnt that much cheaper in Europe now, so £160ish?
  • Insurance, no idea?
  • Break down cover, no idea?

dam it soon turns into a rather expensive trip! :(

'Ring is always expensive when you add up the wear and tear amounts - You could go for 2 weeks in the sun or 5-7 days to the 'Ring.

I know which one I'd pick! ;)

knowing my luck it will be raining 24/7 when i do finally decide to go lol.

Just dont go when i plan to go and it will be safe, like the car wash thread. I wash car... it rains.

any other "must do" sights near Nurburgring? or along the route? Its about 300miles from dunkirk so im thinking 2 or 3 stops at interesting places on the way out to have a rest. will do same on way back.

its 300 miles from calais, easy to do in one stop unless you need fuel. just under 4 hours if traffic is good, about 4 and a half otherwise. roads are generally nice to drive on and clear apart from roadworks and Brussels.:)

yeah but im the sort of person that will be driving down a main road, see something nice and turn off to have a look around, take pictures etc. :)

Reallyyyyyy old thread bump but no point in starting another. We're going to the 'ring in September and we are camping, is Camping am Nurburgring still the best camping place to go?

Deliberating between the Ferry or Eurotunnel at the moment. 100% camping and most likely at Camping am Nurburgring.
