Was looking for some ideas/advice on what you think might be wrong with my car. It's a 96 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 which I know isn't a great car but for my first car it was fine as it came with 12 months M.O.T and was low mileage. I haven't had any problems with it up until now. Yesterday morning it started up fine and set off ok but then when I got off the motorway approaching some light when I put the clutch in to stop the engine started to splutter and it really struggles to keep going but then it seems to set off ok when I pull away. This happened frequently until I got to work and at one point the dash lights came on for a second as though It had stalled but it just managed to save itself from doing so. The car seems to start up fine and on the way home and out this morning it seemed to struggle sometimes but not all the time. Occasionally pulling away it would stutter and jerk a bit but not all the time. It's going in for a full service and M.O.T next weekend but I have to drive it to work all week first and I'm worried what's wrong with it. Has anyone got any ideas?

I am no mechanic but my guess would be that your clutch needs attention. I'm sure some experts will contribute to this thread, but in the meantime, here are some symptoms of a bad clutch for you:

- Having difficulty changing or putting your car into gears
- Hearing a crunching noise when you try to depress the clutch
- Car shaking and vibrating when moving off
- Sensing a burning smell
- Vehicle not picking speed as it would normally do when gas pedal is depressed

Ok, this is what I'd do.

Check there is oil and water in the car. (Should be a no brainer).

The problem sounds like you're not getting enough spark to me. So my first thing would be to get a set of plugs and leads.

If it's not the air flow meter then check the vac hoses as i've seen the older vauxhalls suffer with split hoses before and produce rough running, again it's a very cheap fix and quick to replace but can be a pita to track down the correct hose.

Could be an issue with fuelling, but i'd wait (if possible) until after the service, to see if that sorts it out. Make sure the fuel filter is checked/replaced in the service.

Also, i can't help but think this may be something to do with an ICV - as it only seems to happen when you put the clutch in and let the rev's drop?

Ye it only seems to happen then or when I'm accelerating through 1st or 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th seem ok.

So what are people's views on driving it this week until I can get in in for its service?

Spray your leads with WD40 or rub grease into them.

Don't want to sound like a complete idiot but which leads and what is that going to achieve?
