Upgrade 8800GTX

Hi my names bakes and i have had the upgrade bug, ive had my 8800gtx for over a year now. But its not enough i need something new im trying hard really hard i am, but its not enough. I think i can hold on onto the 280gtx+ but its so hard:(

As far as selling a GTX/Ultra, the boat has sailed on that one. I got rid of my Ultra in June for £200 but they're now worth so little you're probably better off "running it into the ground" and waiting until there's literally a title you want that it won't play properly.

Basically either sell early to recoup as much cash as possible or wait as long as possible and accept it'll be worth squat but you'll make a bigger upgrade jump. Right now the GTX is in no-man's land between the two IMHO.

There are help lines and support for this kind of thing you know;)

I think everyone in this forum understands. I know I don't need to upgrade. I'm happy playing crysis on dx9 so it runs lovely for me at 1920x1200, and I keep finding myself playing games like supcom and stalker so there is no real need to upgrade, its just I want to. A well I guess its comforting to know i'm not the only one out there stuck in this boat.

O and does anyone know what the power consumption of something like the 4870 is compared to a 8800GTX?

Just got my bfg 8800 gtx back from rma (missed it terribly) :). almost pressed the buy button for ati 4870 but have mastered myself and controlled my impulses

think full load 4870 is about 333watts
and gtx is 315 fullload

:D As soon as a few things are paid off I'll be doing an upgrade to a 4870 myself so I understand and I don't have any problems running games just like yourself. It's ok I understand :p.

The Corsair 620w will be fine. Or are you talking about the X2 4870?.

I've had mine since release it feels like forever since I bought it. How long has it been out for?

Edit: November 2006. Feels longer then that. Its definitely the longest I've had a card for. My first foray into GPU's was the almighty ATi 9700 pro :D What a beast at the time. Ran eve beautifully. Think I've had every thing thats come out since too.

I sold my 8800GTX a few months back and have limped along on my old trusty 7600GT whilst i have paid a few things off and transferred between jobs (hate the gap between pay days :()

However, get paid on Friday so think I will take advantage of the offer of the week and grab a Powercolour 4870 :D When that is not enough then will grab another for crossfire - will be cheap as chips by then i think!

I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering about it. To upgrade or not.
Sell my faithful 8800GTX with HR-03 and put some more money in the money pit that is my computer and upgrade or not and wait?

I have been planning on getting a 32" TV of some sort and I can either get a nice one for around £500 (probably a little less) or go for a nice cheapy and upgrade my card. I'm stuck....

Ideas?

Hi Guy, A 32" tv is probably too low a 'res to need anything more than a GTX.... my gtx was overkill for the games i needed to play (bf2, stalker) handled all of them with ease @ 1680x1050 and i believe a TV is around 1024x786 ??? unless you get a monitor/tv hybrid like my 22" lg.

Unless ofcourse like me youll be doing a big upgrade then nothing for another 2 years, in which case get a 4870x2 like im planning to do :D

I'm in the same sort of position, getting that itchy upgrade feeling. I was thinking of getting an EVGA GTX260/280 then using the step-up when the +'s arrive, what do u guys think?

i am in the same boat as pretty much every 8800gtx owner here! The card still runs practically everything maxed and there is no reason ot upgrade...BUT... we have had these cards for so long we just "need" a new toy for no reason. It's rare that you get a gfx card that can last for 2 years and still run everything maxed, so lets just wait untill the now legendary 8800gtx's run out of steam and then upgrade :)

Yea i love my gtx but i must say that this weeks ATI offer of Powercolour 4870 X2 is very very very VERY tempting...

I am a tad worried that my PSU might struggle a bit after reading that website link in the thread... Any thoughts ?

Another GTXer here and I'm also in two minds about what to do. I don't have any trouble running games but that urge to upgrade is getting stronger. Must resist :D

Like others, the main worry I have is my Corsair 620w, not sure if getting a 4870 X2 would push it over the top  Since I also have oc'ed cpu/ram and lots of other stuff in the case. Having to fork out for a new psu as well doesn't thrill me.

My 8800GTX popped its cloggs and went to the great hunting ground in the sky

Pretty happy with my GTX280 , it slaughters most games ( except arma / crysis )
