This is my first time in sorting this but hopefully it should run smoothly.

In respect of this thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17908907.

A new judge will be required, people who are interested in becoming a judge for the competition must apply here.

Could applicants please show a post of interest within this thread - followed by an email to myself (hotmail email in trust) containing;

Name;
Forum Name;

Brief paragraph on your interest in photography and reasons you feel you are suited to be a judge.
Upon receipt of this you will receive a return message containing an image that we would like you to give a brief judgment on.

The closing date for entries will be 31st August 2008, upon the closing of applications the existing judges will asses the applications and choose the most fitting applicant.

Thanks and Good luck all.

I vote: whole forum

System: run a poll on all the available photos,making it so you can't vote for yourself

Why: a more fair approach and you can be sure the publics opinion and hopefully best photo are accounted for

That is how it is over at TP, you get the usual people complaining that it is a popularity competition with friends voting for each other. Every system has its advantages and disadvantages, i believe an open vote is less fair of an approach to how the competition is ran here.

With that model you have 2 or 3 pictures getting most of the votes with no one voting for the rest, a lot of people would lose the incentive for entering due to the lack of feedback IMO.

I haven't entered for ages now, I think I might have to get my camera out again!

Could a poll not be done where the results are not shown until the poll closes, that way you don't know who is winning. I use another forum that does that and it makes it fair and removes the popularity contest..?

I'd like to see the current system continued, obviously there are advantages and drawbacks to any system, but the current method works well in general and most people seem happy with it - other than those who can't accept the opinions of other people might differ from their own. I think it's much better having 3 people who will look at each and every photo and give their honest opinion. If it were a poll, then the lower ranked entries might not get many votes which would be a bit discouraging as you aren't getting as much feedback when you are in the situation where you need it most. And if you take a really great photo, then a load of people just saying "nice shot" isn't much use either apart from inflating the ego. If I entered a photo and get no votes, that's no feedback and so a waste of time entering (or that's how I'd see it)

I'd like the current system to remain in place, as said there are other communities who do thing differently so if anyone is really unhappy about how it's done there is nothing stopping them joining other communities for the competitions they host. I'd apply but I don't have the spare time to do something like this, but good luck to anyone who does apply :)

Yep, I've seen a forum that has an anonymous critique section where a posted image doesn't say who posted it. That would be great for discussion and the anonymous poll great and far less hassle for people running it?

That system finds voters only going on impact, not technique or even theme relevance. I watched the TP comp and it was a complete farce.

The current system breeds excellence imo. I wouldnt be happy with any changes.

Our way works just fine thanks. It doesn't need changing and it's one of the reasons I enter this comp and not the one over at TP. I might not agree with the judges every round but I like the challenge.

Thats why I suggested making the poll results hidden until voting was over :)

I'm assuming it would only be possible to have a system where you could place one vote as opposed to everyone being able to score all the pictures individually here;

It would most likely be the case where there were a few pictures that were obviously much better then the majority of the others. There are after all some very talented photographers here. These few pictures would get the majority of the votes and quite a few of the not so good entries won't score anything because not many people will think they're the best of the bunch.

I like the old system - after my last (and very first entry), I know now where I stand according to the judges' opinion and I can aim to improve on it, in terms of score. With a voting system, I'll not get the rated scores for each requirement and can't work on improving them.

Count me for another vote for keeping the existing system.

The system of judging is the reason that I for one enter here every month and not elsewhere.

I haven't been on the receiving end of the current system, but I also like the anon forum votes idea. Can the 2 not be combined, with the forum result weighting the judges votes?

I reckon an anonymous system where no one knows who submitted what pictures or know who votes is best. for a start it'd be a lot quicker.

Its only a bit of fun anyway, without trying to play it down, i'm not sure whether the competition is serious enough for a panel of judges..

On the other hand, instead of competitions there could be a theme less "image of the month" sticky, where people post a few shots and theres an end of month vote, or selection.

Just my 2 c

For you perhaps, but I feel very differently. I think the current method provides the best avenue for advancement. It's definitely fun, but thats no reason not to take it seriously.
